Missouri upsets No. 21 Texas

Nov 13, 2011 - 2:09 AM Columbia, MO (Sports Network) - Kendial Lawrence and James Franklin each ran for a score as Missouri upended 21st-ranked Texas, 17-5, at Faurot Field.

Lawrence ran for 106 yards on 18 carries while Franklin had 33 yards on 13 rushes for the Tigers (5-5, 3-4 Big 12), who have won two of their last three. James Franklin passed for 186 yards on 18-of-26 attempts.

"I was really proud of our football team and it was definitely a gut-check," said Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel. It's a big win for us. This was the first time since my tenure that we beat Texas. I'm just real proud of our football team -- it's been a very frustrating and disappointing year for our players, and you can see it in their eyes and their faces. I just want to use this victory to get better and play real well against Texas Tech."

David Ash was 13-for-29 for 158 yards and an interception for the Longhorns (6-3, 3-3), who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Jeremy Hills had 35 yards on 11 carries.

"Give Missouri credit. Obviously their defense played much better than our offense," said Texas head coach Mack Brown. "I thought our offense didn't play well throughout the day and I thought that was evident. They stopped our running game and we had the inability to throw the ball down field."

The Longhorns held the first lead of the game on a 27-yard field goal from Justin Tucker with about 8 1/2 minutes to play in the first.

The drive was preceded by a long drive from Missouri that saw the team get into the red zone, but L'Damian Washington fumbled after a catch and Texas recovered at it's own 12.

Texas' 12-play, 78-yard drive was highlighted by a 45-yard catch from Marquise Goodwin and Texas held a 3-0 lead.

On its first possession of the second quarter, Missouri took the lead. Starting at its own 19, Missouri benefitted from a personal foul to Texas and a 40-yard ctach from T.J. Moe. Franklin capped the nine-play, 83-yard drive with a two-yard run into the end zone for a 7-3 lead with under nine minutes to play in the second.

It was the first time Missouri held a lead over Texas since the second quarter of a game in 2001.

Following a three-and-out from Texas, the Tigers padded their lead as Lawrence took a pitch out to the right on the option and sprung into the end zone on a 35-yard score.

Ash was picked off by Kenji Jackson late in the first half.

Missouri blocked a Tucker punt and recovered the ball at the Texas one. The Longorns defense, though, came up with three straight stops on running plays to limit Missouri to just a 19-yard field goal from Trey Barrow for a 17-3 game with just over seven minutes remaining in the third.

Texas returned the favor later in the third when it blocked a Barrow punt, which went out of the end zone to give Texas a safety.

The Longhorns started the next drive at the Missouri 46, but were only able to go 10 yards and a 53-yard field goal from Tucker was off the mark.

Two of Texas' next three possession were three-and-outs with the other drive just barely crossing midfield.

Missouri wasn't able to garner much more offense, but did manage some first downs and was able to kill off large chunks of the clock to give the team the win.

Texas had won the previous six meetings with Missouri and is now 17-6 all-time against the Tigers...The Longhorns hosts Kansas State next Saturday...Missouri hosts Texas Tech next Saturday...Missouri totaled 338 yards and held Texas to just 247 yards...Moe led all receivers with five catches for 74 yards.
