Final
Moore, Broncos best Cowboys
Nov 27, 2011 - 12:48 AM Boise, ID (Sports Network) - Kellen Moore passed for three touchdowns and Doug Martin ran for two, helping No. 7 Boise State to a 36-14 defeat of Wyoming at Bronco Stadium.Moore completed 24-of-36 passes, including an improbable Hail Mary touchdown to Matt Miller at the end of the first half, and finished with 279 yards. Martin carried the ball 26 times for 153 yards for the Broncos (10-1, 5-1 MWC), who reached 10 wins for the sixth consecutive season.
Freshman Brett Smith passed for 78 yards and a score for the Cowboys (7-4, 4-2), who had won their last two and were battling the Broncos for second place in the conference.
"It was a tough day. He has had tough days against the three ranked teams we have played," said Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen. "Most people have tough days against teams like that until you get a chance to get some experience on this football team."
Luke Anderson returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown during Boise State's first drive, and the Broncos' next three ended with a punt.
But they then rattled off 36 consecutive points, scoring on six consecutive possessions, to take control.
Late in the first half, Martin scored on a two-yard run to end a 17-play, 87- yard drive that lasted more than six minutes. Boise State converted five third downs during that possession alone, including the 3rd-and-goal situation when Martin ran into the end zone.
The Broncos got the ball back at the Wyoming 46 with eight seconds to play and managed to score. After Moore threw incomplete, he heaved the ball toward the end zone, and a Wyoming defender tipped it before Miller -- lying with his back across the goal line -- batted the ball once before hauling it in.
"That was probably a once-in-a-lifetime catch," Miller said. "I was just trying not to get stepped on, really. The ball really just kind of fell into my arms...It's nothing you can explain. It's a lucky catch."
Boise State carried a 13-7 lead into halftime after the extra point was blocked, and scored again coming out of the break. Michael Frisina kicked a 23-yard field goal nearly three minutes into the third quarter.
The Broncos got back in the end zone on their next possession, which Moore ended with a 10-yard strike to Kyle Efaw and a failed two-point conversion.
Moore hooked up with Gabe Linehan for a 17-yard TD with 2:20 left in the third, and Smith was picked off three plays into the Cowboys' next drive. That put Boise State at the Wyoming 43, and the Broncos needed seven plays to score.
Moore closed the quarter with two completions totaling 22 yards, and the Broncos rode their running game to the end zone. Martin ran twice for 13 yards to start the fourth quarter, then ended the march with a one-yard TD.
Faced with a 36-7 deficit, the Cowboys didn't get back in the game. They followed Martin's touchdown with Smith's eight-yard TD to Josh Doctson, but that play ended a drive that lasted nearly eight minutes.
Game Notes
