Navy continues dominance of Army

Dec 11, 2011 - 1:21 AM Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Jon Teague made a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter and Navy's defense came up with a late stand, as the Midshipmen made it 10 straight wins over the Army Black Knights with a 27-21 victory from FedEx Field.

Kriss Proctor carried the ball 32 times for 97 yards and two touchdowns for the Midshipmen (5-7), who won three of four to end the year. Alexander Teich rushed for 93 yards and a score on 18 carries.

"So proud of Kriss Proctor. He battled today," Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo said. "Had some turnovers, but the kid continued to battle. He just put us on his back toward the latter part of the game and helped us find a way to finish that game off."

Trent Steelman threw for 77 yards and a touchdown and carried the ball 12 times for 62 yards and a touchdown for the Black Knights (3-9), who dropped four straight to end the year.

Malcolm Brown carried the ball 11 times for 82 yards and a touchdown, while Raymond Maples added 82 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Navy had 296 yards on the ground, compared to 298 for Army.

With the game tied at 21-21, Navy bridged the third and fourth quarters with an impressive 18-play, 75-yard drive that took over nine minutes off the clock. After Aaron Santiago ripped off a four-yard run on 3rd-and-3, Proctor completed his first pass of the game. Gee Gee Greene caught a 13-yard pass before running for 14 yards. Faced with a 4th-and-1 at the 20, Proctor ran for six yards.

The Midshipmen got the ball to the one-yard line. But on 3rd-and-goal, Navy was called for its first penalty of the contest -- a five-yard false start. Proctor then tried to run the option to the right, but was stopped. Teague made a 23-yard field goal to make it 24-21 with 12 minutes to play.

Scott Williams lost control of the ball on the ensuing kickoff. The Midshipmen recovered the ball at the 27. Army's defense came up with a big stop, forcing Teague to make a 44-yarder. The ball snuck through the uprights to make it a 27-21 contest with 10 1/2 minutes left.

Army moved the ball to the Navy 24, but Steelman was sacked by Matt Warrick for a loss on 2nd-and-6. Steelman ran for four yards to set up a 4th-and-7, but then lost one yard.

The Midshipmen ran most of the remaining 4:31 off the clock. Army took over at its own 10 with two seconds to play. Davyd Brooks caught a 29-yard pass on the final play of the game.

"Our team played really hard. Our team competed really well," Army head coach Rich Ellerson said. "We didn't do the things that correlate with success on the scoreboard. We didn't win the turnover battle. We got crushed in the kicking game, and those are always going to be the strategic determinators of who wins and who loses."

A pair of fumbles early on led to the game's first points. Navy marched the ball down to the Army 15 on its first possession of the contest. Proctor carried the ball three yards before Jacob Drozd knocked the ball loose. Nate Combs recovered for Army at the 19.

On the third play of the ensuing drive, the Black Knights turned the ball over. Maples lost control of the football and Jabaree Tuani recovered for Navy at the 26. The Midshipmen ran the ball six straight times, with Proctor capping the drive on a four-yard TD run up the middle.

Following a few punts, Army took over near midfield with 10 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter. Hassin ran for four yards on the first play before fumbling. Brye French recovered the ball for the Midshipmen.

Proctor's 32-yard run on the first play put the ball at the Navy 23. Faced with a 3rd-and-8 from the 10, the Midshipmen ran an option play to the right side. Teich took the pitch and sprinted into the end zone for a 14-0 lead with seven minutes remaining.

Army promptly responded with an eight-play, 67-yard scoring drive. The Black Knights converted two third downs on the march, which Steelman capped with a 34-yard TD run.

After forcing Navy to go three-and-out, Army found the end zone again. Maples' 13-yard run on third down put the ball at the Navy 14. Two plays later, Brown took a pitch and ran five yards before just stretching the ball over the goal line for a 14-14 game with 49 seconds to go.

Each team scored a touchdown to start the second half. Teich's 48-yard return on the kickoff gave Navy great field position. Five plays later, Proctor ran up the middle for two yards and stretched the ball over the goal line.

Larry Dixon's 31-yard run on the ensuing possession set up Brown's 25-yard TD catch for a 21-21 game.
