TCU, minus Pachall, falls to Iowa State

Oct 7, 2012 - 1:31 AM Fort Worth, TX (Sports Network) - Jared Barnett threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns, Josh Lenz hauled in three TD passes and threw for another score, as the Iowa State Cyclones upset the No. 15 TCU Horned Frogs, 37-23, at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

For TCU (4-1, 1-1 Big 12), the loss puts an end to the nation's longest active win streak, as the Horned Frogs had won 12 straight dating back to last season. It also marks their first loss to a conference opponent as a new member of the Big 12. The Horned Frogs had also won an NCAA-best 25 straight conference games.

The Horned Frogs were forced to face Iowa State (4-1, 1-1) without one of their biggest weapons. Junior starting quarterback Casey Pachall was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of DWI and suspended by head coach Gary Patterson for at least a game, possibly more.

Without Pachall, the Horned Frogs turned to redshirt freshman Trevone Boykin, who responded with a tough performance, going 23-of-40 for 270 yards and a touchdown. Boykin also threw three interceptions, with two in the fourth quarter, taking TCU out of contention.

"How many turnovers did we have, five?," Patterson said. "We are not going to get very far doing that, and at least two were inside the 10-yard line. I believe both of them were by freshmen. We never played Trevone Boykin. You have to get used to it."

Jaden Oberkrom was 3-for-3 on his field goal attempts, including a 50-yard kick, and Laderice Sanders and Aundre Dean each had a touchdown in defeat.

After the Horned Frogs got within three at the end of the third, Lenz -- who had already caught three touchdown passes -- hit tight end Ernst Brun on a trick-play wide-receiver pass for a 15-yard touchdown with 13:33 to play for a 30-20 cushion.

"They are a great team, but we just felt that we could attack in certain areas," said Lenz. "We just executed with the play calls and we were able to score."

After Oberkrom kicked a 39-yard field goal, David Irving picked off a Boykin pass and took it back for a TD, making it a 37-23 game with 7:51 remaining.

TCU drove to the ISU 3, but Boykin was picked off by Jake Knott with 2:15 to play.

Iowa State needed just four plays to score on the game's opening possession when Barnett hit Lenz down the right sideline for a 51-yard touchdown strike.

On TCU's initial offensive series, Boykin made a mistake in his first pass, throwing an interception to cornerback Jacques Washington, giving Iowa State the ball back at the TCU 43-yard line.

Iowa State was able to move the ball to the 28 and settled for a 46-yard field goal by Edwin Arceo to take a 10-0 lead with 9:38 left in the first.

TCU finally got on the board when Boykin threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Dean with 1:50 left in the first quarter.

Barnett responded by hooking up with Lenz for a 74-yard touchdown strike. Arceo missed the extra point try for a 16-7 margin.

TCU missed out on two opportunities in the second, turning the ball over on consecutive possessions via fumbles in Iowa State territory.

First, running back B.J. Catalon, after an 18-yard gain on the ground, fumbled at 3. Following a three-and-out by the Cyclones that gave the ball back to TCU near midfield, another possession was lost when Catalon caught a five-yard pass from Boykin out of the backfield and coughed the ball up again, giving Iowa State possession at its 37.

A 15-yard personal foul penalty on Aviante Collins pushed TCU back, and the Horned Frogs settled for a 38-yard field goal by Oberkrom to go into the half trailing 16-10.

Iowa State struck again on its first possession of the second half, moving the ball 80 yards downfield on eight plays -- getting 67 yards on the ground -- to set Lenz up for a 1-yard touchdown reception.

TCU countered when Boykin hit Josh Boyce for a big 30-yard play through the air to set up 1st-and-goal at the 1. Sanders then pounded the ball into the end zone to make it 23-17.

Oberkrom boomed a 50-yard field goal with 2:41 left in the third.

Game Notes

Entering the game, the Horned Frogs had been one of the best defensive teams in the country, ranking second in the FBS with just 7.3 points per game allowed and seventh with 255.8 yards allowed ... The Horned Frogs held a 455-350 yard advantage on offense ... Iowa State won for the first time in four meetings ... TCU dropped its first conference game since a 13-10 decision at Utah on Nov. 6,2008 in the Mountain West. It was the Horned Frogs' first conference home loss since a 27-20 defeat to Utah on Oct. 18, 2007.
