McCoy sets record in Texas' blowout win

Oct 15, 2006 - 3:30 AM AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- After Colt McCoy's performance against Baylor, he soon could be hearing the Texas faithful ask, "Vince who?"

McCoy tossed a school-record six touchdowns as Texas posted a 63-31 rout of Big 12 Conference rival Baylor.

McCoy completed 21-of-32 attempts for 275 yards and broke the school record of five TD passes set by James Brown in 1994 and matched by Chris Simms in 2002.

Texas, which won the national championship last season behind All-American quarterback Vince Young, trailed, 10-0, early in the second quarter before McCoy took over. The redshirt freshman threw three TDs in a 28-point period to help the Longhorns (6-1, 3-0 Big 12 South) seize control of the contest.

"I didn't realize it in the game, but it feels great now," McCoy said. "We weren't getting things done in the first quarter, and it was because of me. I was getting happy feet and leaving the pocket and making poor decisions."

"We're not proud we got behind," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "But we're proud we answered."

Brown was concerned about a letdown after coming off a 28-10 victory over Oklahoma in their annual "Red River Rivalry" matchup in Dallas.

"We always talk about not eating the poison cheese, but we nibbled some," Brown added. "We didn't throw up but we got a little dizzy."

Billy Pittman began the second-quarter barrage with a 24-yard reception and opened a 42-17 advantage with a 62-yard touchdown catch with 96 seconds left in the third quarter.

Pittman gained 95 yards on three receptions while fellow receiver Limas Sweed had six catches for 98 yards and two TDs, including a 50-yarder from McCoy that set the record with 6:35 to play. That score made it 49-24 and iced the game.

"We beat ourselves more than (McCoy) beat us," said Baylor cornerback C.J. Wilson, who was burned for three touchdowns. "If you want to give it to him, you can. I am not bitter or anything like that. If I was a betting man, and I am not, I would bet anything that our defense would beat their offense any day of the week."

Texas' defense returned two Baylor turnovers for TDs, the first on Matt Melton's 34-yard interception run in the second period and the second on Robert Killebrew's 31-yard fumble return that made it 56-24 with 5:52 remaining.

Shawn Bell went 25-of-47 for 303 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Baylor (3-4, 2-1 South), which was crushed by Texas last year, 62-0.
