Baylor offense rolls in rout of Buffalo
Sep 8, 2013 - 1:58 AM Waco, TX (Sports Network) - Bryce Petty racked up 338 yards and two touchdowns while Lache Seastrunk rushed for three scores as 23rd-ranked Baylor routed Buffalo, 70-13, at Floyd Casey Stadium.Petty completed 13-of-16 passes and Seastrunk carried 17 times for 150 yards and his three scores. Shock Linwood gained 76 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while Tevin Reese and Antwan Goodley each reeled in four catches and a touchdown, gaining 130 and 124 yards, respectively.
Baylor's (2-0) potent offensive attack was on display once again after they downed Wofford, 69-3, in the season-opener last week. The Bears gained a school-record 781 yards of total offense and extended their winning streak at home to six games dating back to last season.
"We're 2-0 and that's right where we wanted to be after two weeks," said Baylor head coach Art Briles. "You don't want to pat yourself on the back or anything, but I think our guys are confident, they know what they're doing, and we're playing at a high speed with a lot of highly-effective plays."
Joe Licata threw for 214 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 10-of-16 for Buffalo (0-2), which falls to 0-4 all-time against programs from the Big 12. Alex Neutz caught six passes for 197 yards and a score.
"We knew they played a lot of cover four and we could attack them with some deep balls," said Neutz. "We were able to do that successfully a couple of times."
Buffalo reached into its bag of tricks during the opening possession when Licata found Neutz 54 yards down the field after a flea-flicker to put the Bulls at the Baylor 21-yard line. It took a pass to Fred Lee for 10 yards on 3rd-and-10 and six Branden Oliver runs, but the veteran running back finally plunged over the goal line from a yard out for the game's first points.
It was all Baylor from that point on. Reece raced 61 yards for a touchdown to tie the score on Petty's first pass of the ensuing possession.
After forcing a Buffalo punt, Baylor was back at it, scoring its second touchdown after a 5-play, 83-yard drive that spanned less than a minute. Reese gained 44 yards down the left sideline on the initial play before Linwood's 3- yard touchdown run.
Seastrunk's 8-yard run with 3:52 remaining in the first quarter gave Baylor a 21-7 edge.
Licata and Neutz hooked up twice on the next Bulls' drive, a 49-yard connection down to the Baylor 13 and a 14-yard score over the middle, but Baylor wasted no time scoring again before the first quarter concluded.
On 3rd-and-4 from his own 17-yard line, Petty found Goodley for an 83-yard pitch and catch to the end zone.
The Bears scored again early in the second when terrific field position following a Levi Norwood punt return led to Petty's five-yard keeper.
Seastrunk added two more scores late in the second around Bryce Hager's 91- yard fumble return for a touchdown. Seastrunk scored from one and 33 yards out while Hager scampered 90 yards after picking up a Licata fumble. Baylor led 56-13 at intermission.
Buffalo was kept out of the end zone in the second half while Linwood scored his second rushing touchdown a minute into the third and backup quarterback Seth Russell found Jay Lee down the left sideline early in the fourth for a 53-yard score to result in the final margin.
