Scott, Ole Miss run past Texas
Sep 15, 2013 - 5:43 AM Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Bo Wallace threw two touchdowns passes and ran in another score as 25th-ranked Ole Miss defeated Texas, 44-23, on Saturday.Wallace went 17-for-25 with 177 yards and added 12 carries for 57 yards for the Rebels (3-0), who saw Jeff Scott run for 164 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and added a punt return for a touchdown.
"I'm just really proud of our group of guys in that locker room: players and coaches, managers, administration," Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said. "To represent our university on a stage like this is a blessing to us."
Case McCoy was 24-for-36 for 196 yards and a touchdown, while Jonathan Gray ran for 91 yards and a score on 19 carries for the Longhorns (1-2), who have lost their past two games after opening the season with a win over New Mexico State.
"I thought the effort was better tonight," Texas head coach Mack Brown said. "They kept fighting and kept competing. We've got to have guys continue to make plays when things aren't going well."
Trailing by six points, the Rebels took the lead on their first drive of the third quarter as the team moved 80 yards over 12 plays, with Wallace taking the ball in from 15 yards out for a 24-23 lead.
A three-and-out from Texas saw Ole Miss get the ball back, and Wallace was able to give his team a 31-23 advantage after finding Evan Engram on a 17-yard score with 1:45 to play in the third.
Texas was again forced to quickly punt, and Scott returned it 73 yards for a score. The extra point was blocked and it was a 37-23 game heading into the fourth quarter.
McCoy fumbled the ball on a rush in the fourth quarter and Ole Miss turned it into seven points as Jaylen Walton took the ball in from eight yards out for a 44-23 lead with 8:42 to play.
Texas failed to convert a pair of fourth down attempts on its next two possessions as Ole Miss walked away with the victory.
Ole Miss started the game with the ball and over eight plays covered 75 yards, with Scott's 5-yard run giving the team a 7-0 lead 2 1/2 minutes in.
On their next possession, the Rebels got into the end zone again as Wallace and Donte Moncrief got together for an 18-yard score and a 14-0 lead with 8:26 to play in the first.
Texas answered on its ensuing touch with a 9-play, 78-yard drive that saw McCoy find Mike Davis for a 13-yard score to make it a 14-7 game with 3:50 left in the first quarter.
The Longhorns got a 28-yard field goal from Anthony Fera less than two minutes into the second quarter, and were able to stop Ole Miss on a 4th-and-4 at their 31 to get the ball back.
Gray capped the 7-play, 69-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to give Texas a 17-14 lead with 8:27 to play.
Wallace lost a fumble on Ole Miss' next touch, and a 30-yard field goal from Fera extended Texas' lead to 20-14.
Following a three-and-out from the Rebels, the Longhorns got another field goal from Fera, this one from 47 yards out, with 39 seconds remaining.
That was enough time for Ole Miss, though, to get into scoring position as Andrew Ritter hit a 52-yarder on the final play to make it a 23-17 game at the break.
