Winston's 4 TDs leads FSU over BC
Sep 29, 2013 - 3:38 AM Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) - Jameis Winston's torrid start to his first season under center continued as the freshman tossed four touchdown passes to help eighth-ranked Florida State Seminoles fight back from down 14 to defeat Boston College, 48-34.Winston completed 17-of-27 for 330 yards and four scores against just one interception while running for a team-high 67 yards on 14 carries. FSU (4-0, 2-0 ACC) outgained the Eagles, 489-397.
Rashad Greene had four receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns while Kelvin Benjamin and Kenny Shaw racked up 103 and 93 yards through the air, respectively, with the latter adding a touchdown catch.
Chase Rettig was impressive leading the Boston College (2-2, 1-1) attack, matching Winston with four scores on 19-of-29 with two interceptions. C.J. Parsons caught a pair of touchdown passes and Andre Williams carried 28 times for 149 yards.
"Obviously we have a very disappointed locker room right now," said Boston College head coach Steve Addazio. "I thought our team played with a lot of pride and a lot of toughness. We made plays. We gave up too many big plays."
Following an FSU three-and-out on its opening possession, Spiffy Evans returned the punt 19 yards into Seminoles' territory. Williams rushed six times on the ensuing eight-play drive, which resulted in Rettig finding Parsons in the end zone from six yards out for a quick 7-0 lead.
"I think this game was invaluable in (terms of) experience," said Williams.
Roberto Aguayo remained perfect in his short career with a 40-yard field goal on the next Seminoles' drive. The redshirt freshman entered the contest 5- for-5 on field goals and 20-for-20 on extra points.
BC added to its lead late in the first period when Rettig rolled out and passed to Jake Sinkovec for a short score. Earlier in the drive, Rettig picked up a 3rd-and-6 conversion with an 11-yard scamper, and he found Brian Miller for 26 yards two plays before the 3-yard touchdown.
Nate Freese's 24-yard field goal put the Seminoles in a 17-3 hole before FSU ran off 21 straight points to end the half.
Winston found Greene deep down the middle for a 56-yard touchdown at the 10:35 mark of the second quarter. Late in the half, the young signal caller orchestrated an 80-yard drive and hit Chad Abram for a 10-yard touchdown.
The Seminoles then forced a quick punt and on the final play of the half from near midfield, Winston navigated the pocket to avoid tacklers and unleashed a strike down the right sideline to Shaw, who reeled in the pass and fell into the end zone for the go-ahead 55-yard score.
Freese split the uprights on BC's first drive of the second half, but Winston marched FSU right back down the field and found Greene for a 10-yard score.
The two teams traded touchdowns late in the quarter. Karlos Williams' 1-yard touchdown dive put the visitors ahead 38-20, but Rettig found Myles Willis, who was wide open down the right sideline on a wheel route, for a 52-yard score to make it a two-possession game.
Aguayo kicked his second field goal early in the fourth quarter, and moments later, P.J. Williams intercepted Rettig and trotted into the end zone for a 48-27 margin.
Rettig's fourth quarter touchdown pass to Parsons made it 48-34, but Nate Andrews' interception on Rettig's off-balance 4th-and-13 pass to the end zone sealed the win for FSU, which improved to 4-0 for the second straight season.
Game Notes
Greene now has a touchdown reception in five straight games, a feat which he also accomplished in 2011. Jimbo Fisher improved to 36-10, extending the nation's best winning percentage to .783 ... FSU improved to 8-4 all-time against Boston College ... Rettig threw for 197 yards.
