Clay leads Oklahoma to win over K-State
Nov 24, 2013 - 12:54 AM Manhattan, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Brennan Clay rushed for 200 yards on 31 carries with two touchdowns as the No. 22 Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Kansas State Wildcats, 41-31, at Bill Snyder Stadium.Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight started in place of the concussed Blake Bell and threw for 171 yards with a touchdown and interception. Knight also carried the ball 14 times for 82 yards and touchdown for the Sooners (9-2, 6-2 Big 12), who won their second straight game.
"We have talked about starting fast all year long but it has not happened for us all year. Today, we came out on that first drive and we were kind of hitting on all cylinders and we put up points early and that really set the tone for the day," said Knight.
Jalen Saunders led Oklahoma receivers with 95 yards on seven catches and Sterling Shepard caught a touchdown. Bob Stoops won his 158th game as the Sooners head coach, passing Barry Switzer as the winningest coach in school history.
Tyler Lockett caught three touchdowns with 278 receiving yards and 162 yards as a kick returner for the Wildcats (6-5, 4-4). Lockett set a school record for most receiving yards in a game, breaking his record of 237 yards on September 21 against Texas. Jake Waters completed 17-of-29 passes for 348 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.
"Overall, this game was a collective loss. Take your pick, we just didn't play well. Oklahoma was the better team. They played better and coached better than we did today. That is not the way we have come through the second half of the season, but it is the way we played today," said Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder.
Knight found Shepard from 12 yards out to cap an 8-play, 64-yard drive halfway through the first quarter. Two drives later, Knight ran off the option and dove into the end zone from eight yards out to put the Sooners up 14-0 with 10:58 left in the second quarter.
Kansas State got on the board less than a minute later when Waters hit a wide- open Lockett, who easily walked into the end zone for a 48-yard score. The Wildcats tied the game when Lockett beat the Sooners' secondary again after faking a slant route and running up the sideline for a 30-yard with 5:26 remaining in the first half.
Clay found a huge hole and raced down the field for a 64-yard touchdown less than two minutes later, but Kansas State again responded quickly. Waters connected with Lockett 26 seconds later on a 90-yard touchdown.
Michael Hunnicutt hit a 30-yard field goal with two seconds left in the half to give the Sooners a 24-21 lead. Hunnicutt drilled a field goal from 37- yards out early in the third to extend the lead to 27-21.
Ian Patterson countered with a 28-yard field goal for Kansas State on their next drive to make it a three-point game with 5:12 left in the third quarter.
After Oklahoma's defense forced Kansas State to punt from its own end zone, Saunders returned it to the Kansas State three. On the next play, Clay ran to his left and stiff armed a defender on his way to his second touchdown of the day to make it 34-24 early in the fourth.
Three plays into Kansas State's next drive, Zack Sanchez picked off Waters and took the ball back for a 74-yard touchdown, giving the Sooners a 41-24 lead.
Waters dove into the end zone from a yard out with six minutes left to account for the final score.
