Boise State looks to extend nation's longest winning streak
Sep 8, 2007 - 10:29 AM No. 22 Boise State (1-0) at Washington (1-0) 3:30 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Boise State may be hard-pressed to build on the longest winning streak in the country.
The 22nd-ranked Broncos look to extend their 14-game winning streak Saturday when they visit Washington of the Pac-10 Conference.
After capping last season with a memorable win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, the Broncos opened the 2007 campaign last Thursday with a 56-7 rout of Weber State. Boise State has not lost since falling to Boston College, 27-21, in the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl.
The Broncos are 0-7 on the road against Pac-10 teams, a streak that includes three losses at Oregon State, two at Washington State and one each at Arizona State and UCLA. Boise State and Washington are meeting for the first time.
Last week, Ian Johnson rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Taylor Sharp was impressive in his debut, completing 14-of-19 passes for 184 yards and a TD. Backup tailback Jeremy Avery also excelled for the Broncos, rushing for 105 yards and two scores on just 10 carries.
Only a junior, Johnson already is fifth on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,504 yards. If he matches last season's total of 1,713 yards, he will move up to No. 2, only trailing Cedric Minter (4,475 yards).
After winning just seven of 23 games the past two years, Washington (1-0) got Tyrone Willingham's third season as coach off to a good start with a 42-12 rout at Syracuse last Friday.
Louis Rankin rushed for a career-high 147 yards and three touchdowns for the Huskies. Jake Locker, Washington's top recruit in 2005, played with poise in his first career start, completing 14-of-19 passes for 142 yards without a turnover.
However, Washington will be tested by Boise State's high-powered offense. Since the 2000 season, the Broncos are averaging 41.7 points per game, the best mark in the country. They have won 58 of their last 64 games.
Boise State faced one Pac-10 opponent last season, routing Oregon State, 42-14.
