No. 10 Baylor opens stadium with 45-0 rout of SMU
Sep 1, 2014 - 6:01 AM Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Baylor opened up its shiny new digs in grand fashion.Bryce Petty tossed a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another in the first half as the 10th-ranked Bears blanked SMU, 45-0, on Sunday night.
A sellout crowd of 45,000 watched on as Baylor debuted McLane Stadium, which unveiled a statue of Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III outside of it prior to the game.
Petty was 13-of-23 for 161 yards in two quarters of action, Shock Linwood carried the ball 16 times for 89 yards and a score and Jay Lee caught eight passes for 83 yards and a touchdown for the Bears (1-0), who won the Big XII last season with an 11-2 mark.
"I don't feel like we were that effective offensively," Baylor coach Art Briles said. "We were just kind of hit or miss on some things. But defensively, that's how we won the game. We kind of felt like going in we would have a good defense. What I saw tonight was a lot of strength and a lot of speed. We are still a work in progress."
Neal Burcham completed 15-of-26 passes for 59 yards for SMU (0-1).
"It was tough. We knew that going in they were a good team," Burcham said. "They have the athleticism up front and are fast. We had to do a better job of handling that. We have to do better next time."
The Bears tallied 24 points in the opening quarter and cruised the rest of the way.
Chris Callahan opened the scoring with a 23-yard field goal on Baylor's initial possession and following a Stephen Nelson fumble recovery later in the frame, Linwood waltzed in for a 4-yard score.
Petty fired a 3-yard TD strike to Tre'Von Armstead and lofted a 46-yard score to K.D. Cannon prior to the conclusion of the first period.
Petty scampered in from five yards out early in the second and Seth Russell's 12-yard TD pass to Lee made it 38-0. Silas Nacita's 1-yard TD run late in the fourth capped the scoring.
