Mauk, Mizzou make short work of UCF
Sep 13, 2014 - 10:33 PM Columbia, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Maty Mauk threw for 144 yards and four touchdowns on 14-of-24 efficiency as No. 20 Missouri claimed a 38-10 decision over UCF in Saturday's interconference clash."Wait until he gets good. There are a lot of things out there that he can do to improve and he knows that," Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel said of Mauk. "He's a great, gamey player, he can make plays and he's got some players making some plays for him. But he can get considerably better."
Bud Sasser and Jimmie Hunt each posted a pair of TD receptions for the Tigers (3-0), who have scored at least 30 points in each of their wins this season. Sasser led his team with 57 yards on five catches and Hunt added 21 yards on his two grabs.
Marcus Murphy contributed 94 yards on 15 carries, and Duro Singleton punctuated the rout with a 60-yard fumble return for a score.
Justin Holman was picked off twice, but racked up 209 yards and one score through the air to William Stanback on 22-of-36 passes for the Knights (0-2), who were coming off a bye week following a loss to Penn State in Dublin, Ireland.
Rannell Hall posted a game-high eight receptions for 73 yards in the loss.
The Tigers reeled off 31 straight points from the second quarter on to secure the win.
Mauk's 10-yard connection with Hunt on the 14th play of a drive that concluded with 6:05 left before halftime provided Missouri with a 14-10 edge.
UCF's Shawn Moffitt pulled a 47-yard try wide right on his team's next series, and though the next three possessions didn't amount to much, the hosts went up 21-10 late in the third quarter on a 21-yard Mauk-to-Sasser connection which occurred four plays after Josh Augusta intercepted a Holman offering.
Mauk and Sasser combined again on a 22-yard score to cap a drive which spilled into the fourth and Mizzou owned an 18-point margin.
Andrew Baggett added a 26-yard field goal to boost the hosts' edge to 31-10, and a comedy of errors led to Missouri's final points of the afternoon.
Holman was sacked on a 1st-and-10 from the Tigers' 18, and lost the ball well behind the line of scrimmage. It was picked up by Michael Campbell, who lost more yardage before coughing up the ball to Singleton, who rolled 60 yards the other way to paydirt.
"Offensively, as bad as it looked for Holman, I thought he really grew up today," said UCF head coach George O'Leary. "I really did. I left him in there, I wanted to see how he handled it. He's a young quarterback and he wasn't given much support.
Mizzou got rolling on its opening possession, as Mauk found Hunt for an 11- yard TD connection, then Moffitt's 19-yard make put UCF on the board late in the opening quarter.
Mauk was picked off by Jacoby Glenn two plays later and his return gave UCF control on the Mizzou 31. On the 10th play of the ensuing series, Holman's 2- yard pass to Stanback gave the visitors a 10-7 edge.
