Wallace throws 4 TDs as Ole Miss cruises
Sep 14, 2014 - 12:39 AM Oxford, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Bo Wallace threw four touchdown passes, leading 14th-ranked Ole Miss to a 56-15 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.Wallace was 23-of-28 with 316 yards despite sitting out the majority of the second half with Ole Miss in firm control.
Jaylen Walton ran for a 71-yard touchdown and caught another from Wallace as the Rebels opened 3-0 for the second straight year.
Vince Sanders had two touchdown grabs and finished with 125 yards on eight receptions.
"I'm really happy we went out and took control of the game and kept control of it," said Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze. "There are some things we did not do particularly well today that we have to get cleaned up. Even though you may be the better football team on a given day, you still have to execute and do the things that will make you one of the top-tier teams in the country."
Terrance Broadway was held to 129 yards on 15-of-30 passing by the Ole Miss defense. He was intercepted three times, including twice by Senquez Golson, who returned the second one 59 yards for a third-quarter touchdown.
Elijah McGuire had 66 yards on 10 carries, and Alonzo Harris ran for the Ragin' Cajuns' (1-2) lone touchdown.
The Rebels scored touchdowns on three consecutive possessions after punting on their first series.
I'Tavius Mathers evaded a tackle in the backfield, split two defenders on the outside and used a stiff arm to stave off a defender as he ran down the left sideline for a 56-yard touchdown.
After Harris fumbled inside the Ole Miss 10-yard line, Walton caught a short toss out of the backfield and turned it into a 40-yard touchdown.
Wallace, who completed his first 14 passes, hit Sanders for a 14-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Sanders caught Wallace's short throw and bounced off would-be tacklers before lunging for the end zone.
The Rebels went up 28-0 after Golson intercepted an overthrown Broadway pass. Wallace connected again with Sanders, this time for a 24-yard scoring strike.
Hunter Stover kicked two field goals sandwiched around a Wallace interception in the final two minutes of the opening half.
The Ragin' Cajuns looked to build off the momentum, but Broadway threw interceptions on each of Louisiana-Lafayette's first two possessions in the third quarter.
"On the road against an SEC team, there is no hope with four turnovers," said Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Mark Hudspeth.
Walton's long TD run made it 49-6 with 7:48 remaining in the third.
