Oregon hosts Cal in key early Pac-10 matchup

Sep 29, 2007 - 10:47 AM No. 6 California (4-0) at No. 11 Oregon (4-0) 3:30 pm EDT

EUGENE, Oregon (Ticker) -- Once again, California coach Jeff Tedford gets to match wits with his former boss.

Tedford's sixth-ranked Golden Bears visit Autzen Stadium on Saturday for an important early Pac-10 Conference contest with No. 11 Oregon.

Tedford served as the offensive coordinator to Ducks coach Mike Bellotti from 1998-2001 before taking the Cal job. The teams did not meet in 2002 but have the past four seasons, with the home team winning each matchup.

The last time the road team won in the series was in 2001, when Oregon crushed Cal, 48-7. Bears coach Tom Holmoe resigned after that 1-10 season, leading to Tedford's hiring.

Cal (4-0, 1-0 Pac-10) opened conference play with a 45-27 home win over Arizona last Saturday, avenging a shocking defeat last year.

Justin Forsett ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears, who outgained the Wildcats on the ground, 186-21.

While Cal scored 28 first-quarter points to take early control, Oregon (4-0, 1-0) struggled at lowly Stanford before scoring 34 unanswered points - 31 after the break - for a 55-31 triumph.

Dual-threat quarterback Dennis Dixon threw for a 367 yards and a career-best four touchdowns and ran for another score for the Ducks, who also received 160 yards and a TD from running back Jonathan Stewart.
