South Florida tries to match best start with win at Florida Atlantic

Oct 6, 2007 - 10:47 AM No. 6 South Florida (4-0) at Florida Atlantic (3-2) 3:30 pm EDT

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (Ticker) - At this rate, Jim Leavitt will be coaching the No. 1 team in the country next week.

Leavitt's rapidly rising No. 6 South Florida squad visits Florida Atlantic for a non-conference game Saturday.

The Bulls (4-0) were unranked as recently as two weeks ago before entering the media poll for the first time in program history at No. 23 on September 16 - eight days after they upset Auburn on the road, 26-23.

South Florida moved up to No. 18 following its 37-10 win over North Carolina two weeks ago, then surged 12 spots following last Friday's 21-13 triumph over then-No. 5 West Virginia.

Linebacker Ben Moffitt returned one of his two interceptions for a 28-yard touchdown for the Bulls, who forced six turnovers.

The Bulls can match the best start in team history with a win. They started 5-0 in 1998, when they were in Division I-AA.

Florida Atlantic (3-2) absorbed a 45-17 loss at then-No. 14 Kentucky last Saturday. The Owls gave up five TDs through the air to Heisman Trophy candidate Andre' Woodson in the defeat.

The teams have not met since 2002, when South Florida routed Florida Atlantic in Tampa, 51-10.
