Arizona State tries to avoid overlooking Washington

Oct 13, 2007 - 10:48 AM Washington (2-3) at No. 14 Arizona State (6-0) 10:15 pm EDT

TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Arizona State still has not experienced a loss under Dennis Erickson. But the Sun Devils may have a tough time staying focused this week.

With top-10 matchups looming the following two games, the 14th-ranked Sun Devils host Washington in a Pac-10 Conference contest Saturday.

After a bye next week, Arizona State (6-0, 3-0 Pac-10) hosts No. 2 California on October 27 before visiting ninth-ranked Oregon the following week.

The Sun Devils remained perfect under Erickson by escaping Pullman with a 23-20 triumph over Washington State last Saturday.

Freshman Thomas Weber booted a 37-yard field goal with 50 seconds to go for Arizona State, which survived Romeen Abdollmohammadi's missed 46-yard attempt with 12 seconds left.

Rudy Carpenter threw two touchdowns but also two interceptions for the Sun Devils, who also received 116 rushing yards from Ryan Torain.

Washington (2-3, 0-2) has not won since ending then-No. 22 Boise State's 14-game winning streak on September 8, 24-10.

The Huskies followed with losses to Ohio State, UCLA and USC, the last a 27-24 setback in Seattle on September 29.

Quarterback Jake Locker was limited to 90 passing yards with an interception but did rush for a pair of touchdowns, including a one-yarder with 34 seconds left. But USC recovered the onside kick and held on.

The Sun Devils have won three in a row in the series, including a 26-23 road win last year.
