Booty, USC use second-quarter surge to beat Oregon State

Nov 4, 2007 - 6:39 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Thanks to John David Booty, Southern California celebrated in style.

Booty threw both of his touchdowns in the second quarter to help the 13th-ranked Trojans coast to a 24-3 triumph over Oregon State in a Pac-10 Conference matchup Saturday.

On Homecoming night, Booty completed 19-of-33 passes for 157 yards in leading Southern Cal (7-2, 4-2 Pac-10) to its 750th win in program history. It was Booty's first appearance after missing the past two games due to a broken finger.

"It was great to be back out there, just battling with the guys, you know, in and out of the huddle," Booty said. "I cherish those moments, especially now that I only have a couple here left with these guys so its really special for me to be back out there."

"This was a real nice homecoming opportunity for us," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "The guys really played a good solid football game."

In the second quarter, Chauncey Washington ran in a one-yard score to snap a 3-3 tie with 9:40 remaining. Washington then found the end zone again on Booty's 26-yard TD toss to make it 17-3 four minutes later.

Washington finished with 60 yards on the ground.

Booty threw his second TD of the half when he hooked up with Patrick Turner on a 13-yard score to give USC a 24-3 cushion heading into the locker room.

Kicker David Buehler's impressive 47-yard field goal opened the scoring for the Trojans, who have not suffered a setback at the Coliseum in this series since 1960.

Southern California's defense collected nine sacks with Everson Griffen leading the way with three of his own.

"(Griffen) was blowing by his guy all night," Carroll said. "We've been waiting a long time for this type of night from him. I mean this kid is talented and really fast. We will continue to call his number. His speed is so very valuable and he is definitely going to have many nights like this in the future for us."

"We couldn't handle their front and didn't get into any rhythm offensively," Beavers coach Mike Riley said. "We had way too many three and outs and put our defense in really bad field position in the first half. That really told the tale."

Sean Canfield went 11-of-25 for 85 yards with an interception for the Beavers, who watched their three-game winning streak come to an end.

"We didn't show up offensively," Oregon State's Roy Schuening said. "To give up (nine) sacks is embarrassing. The first thing I said was sorry to Sean. I take full responsibility for the loss as the leader of the line."

Riley and Oregon State (5-4, 3-3) were hoping for a repeat performance from a year ago, when they upset then-No. 3 USC, 33-31, at home.
