Lewis accounts for six TDs as Indiana routs Michigan State
Oct 28, 2006 - 8:52 PM BLOOMINGTON, Indiana (Ticker) - For a second straight week, Michigan State dug itself a huge hole. This time, Kellen Lewis did his part to ensure there would be no record-setting comeback.Lewis threw five touchdowns and ran for another score as the resurgent Hoosiers won for the third time in four games with a 46-21 Big Ten Conference victory over the Spartans.
Last week, the Spartans pulled off the biggest comeback in Division I-A history by rallying from a 35-point third-quarter deficit for an improbable 41-38 victory at Northwestern.
Drew Stanton threw a 38-yard TD pass to Devin Thomas just under five minutes into this contest to give Michigan State (4-5, 1-4 Big Ten) a 7-0 lead. From there it was all Indiana.
The Hoosiers scored the next 46 points, sparked by Lewis, who threw four of his TD passes to standout wide receiver James Hardy.
A 30-yard strike from Lewis to Hardy with 2:16 left in the first quarter gave the Hoosiers the lead for good, 10-7. The duo connected on scoring strikes of two and seven yards in the second quarter and 13 yards in the third.
Lewis completed 15-of-26 passes for 261 yards with one interception. He also ran for 75 yards on 14 carries.
Hardy had six catches for 83 yards for Indiana (5-4, 3-2), which has lost only to No. 1 Ohio State this month.
Stanton was 10-for-22 for 100 yards for Michigan State, which gained 80 of its 215 yards on its opening drive and had only eight first downs.
