Brink, Washington State pound hapless UCLA
Oct 29, 2006 - 3:03 AM PASADENA, California (Ticker) -- Alex Brink and Washington State waltzed into the Rose Bowl and strolled out with another win.Brink passed for season highs of 405 yards and three touchdowns as Washington State cruised to a 37-15 Pac-10 Conference triumph over reeling UCLA.
It was the third victory in the last four games for the Cougars (6-3, 4-2 Pac-10), who have won their last three road contests against the Bruins (4-4, 2-3).
A junior, Brink completed 28-of-38 passes and was intercepted twice. His favorite target was Brandon Gibson, who hauled in eight catches for 92 yards and a pair of scores.
Star senior Jason Hill added 115 receiving yards and a TD on five catches for Washington State, which controlled the ball for nearly 37 minutes.
UCLA entered the break with a 15-14 advantage thanks to Patrick Cowan's 35-yard TD strike to Junior Taylor with 1:26 left in the half.
But Washington State cruised thereafter, tallying 23 unanswered points to close out the contest. The Cougars took the lead for good with 4:25 remaining in the third quarter when Brink found Gibson for a 17-yard score.
Cowan went 17-of-37 for 252 yards and two interceptions for the Bruins, who have lost three straight.
