Navarre, Maryland holds off Florida State in dramatic fashion
Oct 29, 2006 - 3:23 AM COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) - Jeremy Navarre put Florida State in an unfamiliar position.Navarre blocked a 46-yard field goal try with 42 seconds left as Maryland held off a second-half surge by the injury-ravaged Seminoles to post a 27-24 Atlantic Coast Conference victory.
Florida State (4-4, 2-4 ACC Atlantic) has lost six of its last eight regular-season conference games. The last-place Seminoles have started the campaign at 4-4 for the first time since legendary coach Bobby Bowden's first season in Tallahassee, in 1976.
Trailing by 27-14 in the third quarter, the Seminoles scored the next 10 points, but their final drive stalled on the Maryland 29 before Navarre blocked Gary Cismesia's game-tying field-goal attempt to preserve the victory.
Darrius Heyward-Bey had three catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns and Sam Hollenbach completed 12-for-20 passes for 131 yards and three scores for Maryland (6-2, 3-1 Atlantic), which is now bowl eligible.
Xavier Lee was 22-of-36 for 286 yards and two TDs in his first start for Florida State, which played without starting quarterback Drew Weatherford (ankle tendinitis) and leading receiver De'Cody Fagg (sprained ankle).
