Without Dixon, Oregon visits UCLA
Nov 24, 2007 - 11:34 AM No. 9 Oregon (8-2) at UCLA (5-5) 3:30 pm ESTPASADENA, California (Ticker) -- With its quarterback and national title hopes gone, No. 9 Oregon visits UCLA on Saturday in a Pac-10 Conference matchup.
In prime position to land in the BCS title game, Oregon saw those aspirations dashed with last Thursday night's 34-24 loss at Arizona. The setback knocked the Ducks (8-2, 5-2 Pac-10) from second to ninth in the Bowl Championship Series standings.
The Ducks' hopes were dealt an early blow against the Wildcats when Dixon - one of the leading contenders for the Heisman Trophy - suffered a torn left ACL in the first quarter.
Brady Leaf, the younger brother of former NFL bust Ryan Leaf, replaced Dixon and struggled to move the offense. He completed 22-of-46 passes for 163 yards and two interceptions.
Thanks to last week's loss, Oregon now will need help to reach the Rose Bowl. The Ducks are a game back of Arizona State with two games remaining.
In coach Karl Dorrell's fifth season, UCLA (5-5, 4-3) needs one win in its final two games to become bowl eligible. The Bruins have been to a bowl in each of their four campaigns under Dorrell, who reportedly is on the hot seat.
UCLA has had extra time to prepare for this contest after suffering a 24-20 loss to Arizona State here two weeks ago.
In the loss to the Sun Devils, the battered Bruins used their fourth quarterback of the season in Osaar Rasshan, who went 14-of-27 for 181 yards and an interception. He also rushed for 41 yards on 13 carries.
Oregon scored 20 first-quarter points en route to a 30-20 win over UCLA last season.
