Notre Dame looks for easy win over North Carolina

Oct 31, 2006 - 9:45 PM North Carolina (1-7) at No. 11 Notre Dame (7-1), 2:30 pm EST

SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) - North Carolina has yet to beat a Division I-A opponent this season. Do not look for the pattern to change Saturday, when the struggling Tar Heels visit 11th-ranked Notre Dame for a likely lopsided matchup.

North Carolina (1-7), which barely beat Division I-AA Furman on September 16 for its lone win of the season, slipped to 0-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with last week's 24-17 setback to No. 24 Wake Forest.

The Tar Heels actually held a 17-14 edge entering the fourth quarter but could not hold on for a victory for coach John Bunting, who learned earlier in the week that he will be out of a job at the end of the season.

North Carolina had a chance to force overtime, but Joe Dailey was intercepted in the end zone in the final minute.

Notre Dame (7-1) scored the final 21 points in a 38-14 victory over Navy in Baltimore last Saturday.

Brady Quinn threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns for the Fighting Irish, who extended their NCAA-record winning streak over the Midshipmen to 43 games.

The Irish are 15-1 vs. the Tar Heels. The teams have not met since 1975.
