BYU looks to clinch outright MWC title vs. New Mexico

Nov 14, 2006 - 10:30 PM New Mexico (5-5) at No. 23 BYU (8-2), 4:00 pm EST

PROVO, Utah (Ticker) - No. 23 BYU tries to capture its first outright Mountain West Conference championship since 2001 when it hosts New Mexico on Saturday.

The Cougars (8-2, 6-0 MWC) clinched at least a share of the league title with a 55-7 romp over Wyoming last Thursday.

John Beck completed 20-of-26 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores, moving past Jim McMahon into second place on the school's all-time list for career passing yards (9,805) and total offense (9,810).

New Mexico (5-5, 3-3) had a three-game winning streak end in a 27-21 loss to TCU last weekend.

The Lobos were driving for a go-ahead touchdown when Chris Nelson was intercepted with 22 seconds left.

BYU has a 40-14-1 all-time record against New Mexico but has lost the last two meetings here since 2000, coach LaVell Edwards' final home game.

The Cougars have won the last three games in Albuquerque.

Second-year BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall served as New Mexico's defensive coordinator from 1998-2002.
