Purdue eliminates Indiana from bowl contention

Nov 18, 2006 - 9:11 PM WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- The latest edition for the Old Oaken Bucket had a little more meaning than usual.

Curtis Painter overcame a mistake-filled day as Purdue posted a 28-19 Big Ten Conference victory over Indiana, which was eliminated from bowl contention.

Trying to become bowl eligible for the first time since 1993, the Hoosiers (5-7, 3-5 Big Ten) were unable to take advantage of four interceptions by Painter in closing their season with a three-game losing streak.

Painter threw for 260 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown to Greg Orton early in the third quarter, which gave the Boilermakers (8-4, 5-3) a 14-3 lead.

Orton caught six passes for 112 yards and Dorien Bryant had five receptions for 74 yards and ran for a score for the Boilermakers, who won their third straight game. Purdue closes its season next week at high-powered Hawaii.

Bryant's 15-yard run with 5:06 remaining gave the Boilermakers a 28-19 lead.

Kellen Lewis passed for 290 yards and a touchdown and ran for 103 and a score, and James Hardy caught nine passes for 151 yards and a touchdown for Indiana.

The Hoosiers lost despite rolling up 505 total yards.
