Rankin helps Washington win "Apple Cup" over Washington St

Nov 19, 2006 - 3:59 AM PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) -- Louis Rankin helped Washington end a disappointing season on a high note.

Rankin ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns as the Huskies ended a six-game losing streak with a 35-32 Pac-10 Conference victory over Washington State for the "Apple Cup."

Carl Bonnell overcame two interceptions to throw for 271 yards and two TDs and Marcel Reece had three catches for 107 yards and a score for the Huskies (5-7, 3-6 Pac-10), who won the rivalry game for the seventh time in nine years.

After a scoreless first quarter, Washington fell behind, 14-7, when Eric Frampton scored on a 43-yard interception return with 3:24 to play in the second period.

But Rankin scored on an eight-yard run just over a minute later and Bonnell gave the visitors the lead for good, 21-14, with a 69-yard TD strike to Reece.

The Huskies held a 28-25 edge before Rankin broke off a 77-yard TD run with 10:43 to play. The Cougars countered on a 33-yard pass from Alex Brink to Brandon Gibson with six minutes left but were unable to muster any more points.

Brink went 32-of-54 for 328 yards and two TDs without an interception, but he was sacked five times for Washington State (6-6, 4-5), which had won the previous two meetings. Gibson had eight catches for 129 yards and Dwight Tardy rushed 19 times for 105 yards and a score.
