Wake Forest, Maryland play for ACC Atlantic title
Nov 22, 2006 - 1:05 AM No. 20 Wake Forest (9-2) at Maryland (8-3), 7:45 pm ESTCOLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) - Wake Forest had nothing to play for last week and it showed. The Demon Deacons cannot play so nonchalantly this week.
The 20th-ranked Demon Deacons visit Maryland on Saturday for the Atlantic Coast Conference Atlantic Division title.
Wake Forest (9-2, 5-2 ACC Atlantic), Maryland and Boston College were in a three-way tie for first place in the division until the 18th-ranked Eagles were upset at Miami on Thursday.
The winner of Saturday's game now will face No. 16 Georgia Tech in next weekend's title game in Jacksonville, Florida.
Last Saturday, Wake Forest absorbed a 27-6 home loss to Virginia Tech in a game that had no bearing on the division race. The Demon Deacons had set a school record for single-season wins with a 30-0 road blanking of Florida State the previous week.
Maryland (8-3, 5-2 Atlantic) was blown out at Boston College last weekend, 38-16. The Terps allowed the Eagles to score three defensive touchdowns in the romp.
The Terps have won seven straight from the Deacons. They are 6-0 at home this season while Wake Forest is 5-0 in the road.
No one has shouted yet.
