McCoy, Texas throttle Daniel, Missouri

Oct 19, 2008 - 6:03 AM AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- Letdown, what letdown?

Colt McCoy led top-ranked Texas to a 56-31 victory over Missouri in a Big 12 Conference blowout on Saturday.

The romp, coming on the heels of a win last week over then-No. 1 Oklahoma, solidified the Longhorns' standing as the team to beat and strengthened McCoy's position as the Heisman Trophy front-runner.

McCoy dazzled and doused the hopes of Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, who was looking to get the Tigers and himself on track after being upset last week by Oklahoma State.

"Colt was phenomenal," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "The game has slowed down so much for him right now, and even the ball that was on the ground he picked up and knew where people were and made the play. We are supposed to yell at him for not falling on it, but why yell at him when he made another first down? He's playing at a very high level and the receivers are playing well.

Texas (7-0, 3-0 Big 12 South) scored on its five first-half possessions, rolling up 337 yards of total offense.

"I think this is probably as efficient as we've been," McCoy said. "Obviously there is always room for us to improve, so we're just going to try not to get complacent and try to keep improving."

McCoy ran for one touchdown from six yards and threw for two more scores while going 18-of-20 for 230 yards before intermission. He finished 29-of-32 for 337 yards with two touchdowns passing and one rushing.

"We just came out strong, we came out ready to play and that's important for us every week," McCoy said. "If we can do that every week, that helps the defense out and it helps us get rolling. Like I said, we wanted to win up front and we did."

His touchdown run gave Texas a 7-0 lead after a 12-play, 94-yard drive. Chris Ogbonnaya then scored on a 9-yard run to make it 14-0.

McCoy found Malcolm Williams with a 32-yard strike to make it 21-0 before Ogbonnaya added his second TD, this one from 10 yards.

"I think Malcolm made an unbelievable play," Longhorns wide receiver Jordan Shipley said. "That was at a big time for us in the game. It was great to see him step up and make a great play."

McCoy added to the onslaught by finding Shipley with a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-0.

Missouri (5-2, 1-2 North) managed to get on the board when Jeff Wolfert kicked a 33-yard field goal on the last play of the half.

The Tigers scored on their first drive of the second half as Derrick Washington rolled in from 2 yards to make it 35-10.

McCoy stalled any hopes of a Missouri rally, leading the Longhorns on a 77-yard drive that ate up 3:56. It ended with a 2-yard run by McCoy that made it 42-10. The touchdown was the 82nd of McCoy's career at Texas, a school record.

Daniel found Chase Coffman from 13 yards to cut the gap to 42-17, but the Longhorns answered as Cody Johnson scored from a yard out to up the lead to 49-17.

The quarterback padded his stats with an 18-yard completion to Jared Perry that made it 49-24. He finished 31-of-41 for 317 yards, two touchdowns passing, one rushing and an interception.

"They're one of the best we've faced, right up there with Illinois," Daniel said. "They got around the edge a little bit tonight, but our tackles did a great job out there. I got sacked two or three times, but that happens when you play a team like this. You have to limit it, but they played their tails off."

The Longhorns capped the victory when backup quarterback John Chiles found Dan Buckner streaking down the sideline for a 51-yard touchdown connection.

Playing in extended garbage time, Daniel scored on a 1-yard run with 4:18 left to make it 56-31.

"Obviously, I'm very disappointed in how we played," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. "First, I'd like to give credit to Texas. They were playing outstanding. Colt McCoy, his execution was as good to me as I've ever seen.

"... I didn't think we played our best game, by far, nowhere close to it. To have a chance against a team like this, you've got to play well, and we didn't do that. I'm responsible for that. They just outplayed us, outblocked us, outkicked us - running, passing, coaching, everything.

Missouri has not won in Austin since 1896.
