Brink, Washington State rout Stanford in conference opener

Sep 24, 2006 - 1:31 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Alex Brink and Washington State opened conference play with a bang.

Brink threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as Washington State dominated its Pac-10 Conference opener, posting a 36-10 triumph over Stanford.

It was the third straight victory for the Cougars (3-1, 1-0 Pac-10), who have won four of their last five conference openers.

Brink was outstanding, completing 21-of-33 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Dwight Tardy ran for 97 yards and a score on 17 carries for Washington State, which jumped to a 22-0 halftime lead and finished with 240 rushing yards.

The Cougars owned a 9-0 lead with 7:07 left in the first half when Brink threw his first TD of the contest, a two-yard strike to Jed Collins. Brink plunged into the end zone from a yard out six minutes later to push the advantage to 22-0.

Trent Edwards was 14-of-23 for 159 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Stanford (0-4, 0-2), which managed just 195 total yards and lost for just the fifth time in its last 15 meetings with Washington State.
