Fever thrash Thunderbirds in Adelaide

Jun 5, 2016 - 5:35 AM West Coast Fever have ended their two-game losing streak with an easy 63-51 Trans-Tasman Netball League win over the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

Shooter Caitlin Bassett's season-high of 50 goals at 93 per cent accuracy meant round 10 of the trans-Tasman netball league in Adelaide on Sunday was barely a competition.

Coach Stacey Rosman said her side returned from last week's bye mentally stronger and with a cohesive attack.

"We really stayed in the contest. We knew we needed to put them under immense pressure so we were allowing to play to our strengths which is being able to contest the ball," she told reporters.

The only downside for the Fever was the loss of goal keeper Courtney Bruce who went off with an apparent knee injury in the second quarter.

Interim Thunderbirds coach Kristy Keppick-Birrell, who this week replaced Michelle den Dekker, said her side kept throwing the ball away.

"That is extremely frustrating and that's not good enough. I told them that if they want to wear the dress then the errors have to be reduced every single game," she said.

Goal attack Stephanie Puopolo put up a weak performance for more than three quarters with an accuracy rate below 70 per cent.

Adelaide lifted their game after Christina Bryce came on as shooter and Erin Bell switched to goal attack - but it was too little, too late.

"We got a lot of the ball across the game today. We got better at it and by the last quarter, won the last quarter. But we need to start that from the beginning," Keppick-Birrell said.

Den Dekker and the Thunderbirds parted company on Friday in what the club said was a mutual decision.

The former Australian star had been unable to spark the Thunderbirds with the side losing eight consecutive games to languish at the bottom of the league ladder.

Fever play the NSW Swifts in Newcastle on Saturday while the Thunderbirds face Central Pulse in New Zealand next Sunday.
