Hanie, Bears beat Bills in preseason opener

Aug 14, 2011 - 4:46 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Second-string quarterback Caleb Hanie's four- yard touchdown run in the second quarter was the difference as the Bears took a 10-3 victory over the Bills in the preseason opener for both squads.

Newly-acquired running back Marion Barber was the workhorse on the scoring drive, carrying the ball six times for 37 yards. Barber finished with 45 yards on seven carries.

Jay Cutler, coming off his much criticized performance in last season's NFC Championship game in which he left with a sprained MCL, completed the only pass he threw in one series for no gain.

Ryan Fitzpatrick was efficient for the Bills, completing 7-of-9 pass attempts for 44 yards. Hanie was 3-for-7 for 32 yards.

Linebacker Shawne Merriman, who was picked up on waivers by Buffalo last year but did not suit up for a game, had two sacks, recorded on consecutive plays in the first.

Buffalo struck first on Rian Lindell's 44-yard field goal with two minutes left in the first quarter

Chicago then took a 7-3 with just over eight minutes in the second on Hanie's run.

Robbie Gould missed a 56-yard field goal in the closing minute of the first half and also missed a 33-yard attempt in the game, but connected on a 45- yarder in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin.
