Jets beat Bengals; Burress catches TD

Aug 22, 2011 - 2:19 AM East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Plaxico Burress caught a 26-yard touchdown pass in his Jets debut, as New York dominated the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-7.

Burress signed with the Jets on July 31 after serving 20 months in prison for a gun charge.

The former first-round pick did not play in New York's first preseason game due to an ankle injury. Burress caught three passes for 66 yards on Sunday night.

Mark Sanchez completed 12-of-20 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns for the Jets, who fell to Houston last week. Rookie Greg McElroy connected on 6- of-9 passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Santonio Holmes hauled in three passes for 19 yards and a score. Tight end Dustin Keller caught four passes for 73 yards.

Chris Jennings carried the ball four times for 81 yards in the victory.

Rookie Andy Dalton completed 8-of-19 passes for 86 yards and two interceptions for the Bengals, who lost 34-3 at Detroit last week. Bruce Gradkowski connected on 3-of-7 passes for 50 yards and a pick.

Brian Leonard carried the ball five times for 16 yards and a score in defeat.

The Jets jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Cincinnati's second possession of the game resulted in an interception. Sanchez then connected with Holmes on a 16-yard score for a 7-0 lead.

Another Dalton interception led to Nick Novak's 30-yard field goal to give New York a 10-0 margin after 15 minutes.

Leonard's one-yard TD run early in the second quarter cut the gap to three, but the Jets scored before the break.

Burress capped an impressive 10-play, 99-yard drive with a diving catch near the left pylon.

The Jets outscored the Bengals, 10-0, in the second half to secure the victory.
