Jets top Giants, day after Irene passes NYC area

Aug 30, 2011 - 3:48 AM East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Mark Sanchez threw for 64 yards and a touchdown as the Jets took a 17-3 preseason victory over the Giants.

The game was originally supposed to be played on Saturday, but was postponed until Monday because of the approach of Hurricane Irene.

Sanchez completed 8-of-16 passes and played one drive into the third quarter before leaving the game. Shonn Greene rushed 11 times for 42 yards for the Jets.

Eli Manning also played into the third quarter and went 15-for-30 through the air for 200 yards and two interceptions.

"No one ever counts how many touchdown passes you've thrown in preseason," Manning said. "It's one of those where you're on limited scouting time and you're out there running plays. We had some opportunities, there were some big plays out there - a fade to Mario [Manningham], a go-route to Mario that we missed on. We just have to get sharp on those things and the touchdowns will come."

Brandon Jacobs amassed 51 yards on 10 carries for the Giants, but was tossed out of the game in the third quarter for getting into a fight with Jets rookie defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who was also ejected.

The Giants struck first with a 34-yard field goal by Rhys Lloyd late in the second quarter, but the Jets quickly answered with a 17-yard touchdown pass by Sanchez to Santonio Holmes.

"Overall I think we had a pretty good day. We won the three quarters like we wanted to," said Sanchez. "We started off a little slow, but we got things going right before halftime."

The Jets stopped the Giants on a fourth and goal at the Jets one-yard line in the third, and also blocked a Giants field goal in the period.

The Jets then pulled away in the fourth with a Bilal Powell one-yard TD run to cap a nine-play, 68-yard drive engineered by Greg McElroy, who completed 4-of-5 passes for 39 yards.

Nick Folk connected on a 33-yard field goal later in the fourth to finalize the scoring.
