Bengals rout Jets

Oct 28, 2013 - 1:45 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Marvin Jones had a breakout performance Sunday against the New York Jets.

Jones, a second-year receiver from California, caught a franchise record four touchdown passes in the Cincinnati Bengals' 49-9 rout at Paul Brown Stadium.

Andy Dalton threw for 325 yards and five scores on 19-of-30 throws in just three quarters. He found Jones eight times for 122 yards, while A.J. Green added 115 yards on just three catches.

"We knew we were going to have to take some shots today," said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis.

The Bengals (6-2) took back two Geno Smith interceptions for touchdowns and the AFC North front-runners rolled to their fourth straight victory.

Smith and the Jets (4-4) failed to build off their overtime victory over the New England Patriots. New York managed just 240 total yards, with the rookie quarterback accounting for 159 yards and a pair of pick-sixes on 20-of-30 passing.

Opponents came in averaging 225 yards through the air against the Jets; Dalton gashed them for 257 in the first half alone.

"That was ugly, to say the least," said Jets coach Rex Ryan. "We're fortunate it only counts for one loss because you get your butt kicked like that, you're fortunate that's all it is."

The one-sided affair began in the opening quarter with the Bengals owning a dominating 172-1 advantage in yards.

Jones capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive with 9-yard touchdown catch and Jermaine Gresham hauled in a 4-yard pass in the back of the end zone to give Cincinnati a 14-0 lead just 10:39 into the game.

The Bengals were on the doorstep again early in the second but were stopped three times at the 2-yard line.

Dalton cooled off a bit when Muhammad Wilkerson tipped a pass and intercepted it off another deflection to set up Nick Folk's 45-yard field goal, but the Bengals answered with a quick 8-play, 86-yard scoring drive.

Jones made several defenders miss on a 45-yard catch, then added a 6-yard grab just past the left pylon for a 21-3 Bengals lead midway through the quarter.

Folk was true from 47 yards out 1:08 before halftime, and Brandon Tate's 71- yard return on the ensuing kickoff allowed the Bengals to tack on more via Jones' acrobatic 14-yard touchdown catch. With a defender draped over him, Jones caught the ball in the air, got his left foot down and drug his right before being pushed out of bounds.

Chris Crocker stepped in front of Smith's intended receiver, Jeremy Kerley, on the first play of the second half and went 32 yards untouched the other way for a score.

After Folk connected from 50 yards out, Dalton and Jones hooked up again late in the third, this time on a quick hitch that Jones took in for a 6-yard TD.

Smith's last throw came early in the fourth and resulted in an interception for Adam Jones, who easily returned it 60 yards for a touchdown.

The 49 points were the most by Cincinnati since dropping 58 on the Cleveland Browns on Nov. 28, 2004 ... Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga was taken into the locker room on a cart following a vicious a helmet-to-helmet hit in the second quarter ... Cincinnati has won five straight home games ... David Nelson led New York with eight catches for 80 yards ... The Jets had won eight of their past nine matchups against the Bengals ... Cincinnati plays at Miami on Thursday ...
