Big second quarter propels Bengals past Browns

Nov 17, 2013 - 11:25 PM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Andy Dalton threw three touchdown passes and the Cincinnati Bengals used a 31-point second quarter to beat the Cleveland Browns by a 41-20 margin.

In the second frame, Dalton threw two touchdown passes, Tony Dye returned a blocked punt for a score, Vontaze Burfict returned a fumble for a touchdown and Mike Nugent kicked a field goal.

Dalton completed 13-of-27 passes for 93 yards and two interceptions for the AFC North-leading Bengals (7-4), who improved to 5-0 at home this season.

"This is an urgent month but we have bigger fish to fry," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. We just have to take care of November. This was an important game."

Jason Campbell connected on 27-of-56 passes for 248 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions for the Browns (4-6), who have lost four of five.

"It was a disappointing game for us today. We were not able to overcome the second quarter, and the game got away from us at that point," said Cleveland coach Rob Chudzinski.

Josh Gordon caught five passes for 125 yards and a score in defeat.

The first points of the game came with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Chris Ogbonnaya's 43-yard run and 12-yard catch put the ball in the red zone. The Browns moved the ball to the 1-yard line before settling for a 20-yard field goal from Billy Cundiff.

Joe Haden followed with back-to-back interceptions of Dalton. The first pick led to a 28-yard Cundiff field goal. He returned his second interception 29 yards for a touchdown.

The momentum shifted when Bengals linebacker James Harrison picked off Campbell in the final minute of the first frame. Harrison returned the pick 21 yards for a touchdown, but a penalty nullified the score. On the first play of the second stanza, Jermaine Gresham caught a 25-yard TD pass.

Cincinnati started its next drive from the Cleveland 38 following a partially blocked punt. Mohamed Sanu threw a 25-yard pass to Gio Bernard before catching a 6-yard TD pass from Dalton.

The Bengals blocked another punt with less than five minutes left in the half. Dye, who was signed off the practice squad on Saturday, picked up the loose ball and went 24 yards for a touchdown.

Ogbonnaya fumbled on the ensuing Cleveland possession. Burfict scooped up the fumble and went 13 yards the other way for a touchdown.

Nugent's 41-yard field goal capped the biggest quarter in club history. The field goal made it 31-13 at the half.

The Browns got within 31-20 on Gordon's 74-yard TD catch with 9:29 left in the third stanza.

Campbell was intercepted by Reggie Nelson on the next Cleveland possession.
