Lights out in London: 49ers trample winless Jags

Oct 28, 2013 - 12:43 AM London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - The winless Jacksonville Jaguars have been searching for answers all season.

Not even a change of scenery could help the limping team Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London.

Colin Kaepernick and Frank Gore each scored two touchdowns on the ground as the San Francisco 49ers dominated the Jaguars by a 42-10 margin.

Gore carried the ball 19 times for 71 yards for the 49ers (6-2), who have eclipsed 30 points in each game of a current five-game winning streak. The accomplishment ties a team record for consecutive games scoring 30 or more points, also set in 1994 and 1997.

"The offense came out strong and put together great drives," said 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh.

"It felt like a huge stage," he said. "Wembley has a great tradition and status as a venue. It was an amazing experience for the players and me personally. At the beginning when they played the two anthems it felt like I was at the Olympics. I always wanted to be in the Olympics."

Kaepernick completed 10-of-16 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown for San Francisco, which made its second trip to Wembley Stadium after having bested the Denver Broncos 24-16 on Oct. 31, 2010. Kaepernick also carried the ball seven times for 54 yards.

Chad Henne connected on 29-of-45 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars (0-8), who are off to the worst start in team history.

Sunday's game marked the first of four London games over the next four years for Jacksonville. It was also the second of two scheduled NFL games in London this season as part of the league's International Series. The Minnesota Vikings bested the Pittsburgh Steelers back on Sept. 29.

"A great atmosphere," said Jaguars coach Gus Bradley. "The crowd stayed all the way till the end."

As expected, the 49ers had no problems solving Jacksonville's defense that came into the game ranked 31st by allowing 31.7 points per game. San Francisco scored a touchdown on its first four possessions of the contest.

On the second play of the game, Bruce Miller was wide open for a 43-yard catch-and-run. Later in the drive, Gore got two yards on 4th-and-1 before scoring from 19 yards out.

"They're a very good team. We knew that coming in," said Bradley. "They do a really good job running the ball and getting big plays."

The 49ers started their next possession from their own 20-yard line. A defensive pass interference penalty moved the ball into Jacksonville territory. Anquan Boldin hauled in a 21-yard pass on 3rd-and-5 prior to Kaepernick's 12-yard TD run. Kaepernick followed his blockers to the left and stretched the ball over the pylon for a 14-0 lead with 2:36 left in the first quarter.

As the Jaguars struggled on offense, San Francisco continued to increase its lead. Early in the second stanza, Kaepernick scrambled for 17 yards to the Jacksonville 16-yard line. Following Boldin's 14-yard catch, Kaepernick found Vernon Davis open in the end zone.

Jacksonville then went three-and-out on offense. On the first play of the ensuing San Francisco series, Davis caught a 31-yard pass. Two plays later, Davis hauled in a 19-yard pass. Kaepernick capped the series with a 9-yard TD run, making it 28-0 with 7:49 left in the half.

The Jaguars, who came into the game ranked last in total offense, finally got something going near the end of the half. Henne completed four straight passes to move the ball to the San Francisco 26-yard line. The drive stalled from there and Josh Scobee made a 38-yard field goal with 10 seconds to go.

The Jaguars actually moved the ball down the field on their first possession of the second half. With the ball at the 6-yard line, Henne threw two straight incompletions to turn the ball over on downs.

Gore fumbled on the ensuing San Francisco possession. Just three plays later, Mike Brown caught a 29-yard TD pass to cut the gap to 28-10.

The 49ers came right back with a touchdown of their own. Kendall Hunter's 41- yard run preceded Gore's 2-yard score.

In the early stages of the fourth quarter, Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis fumbled and Dan Skuta picked up the loose ball and raced 47 yards the other way for a touchdown.

Game Notes

  • blakelylaw It might last a while, but wouldn't have staying power. Look at NFL Europe. Was great for a while as a D League; then just died. Some of us follow CFL, but only as a stop gap in the summer or to follow a favorite college player who may end up there.

  • Jonny Porkchild OINK! The PIG would prefer we not have a permanent NFL team in London. That would be like having a professional cricket team in America! Anyway, what would we call this new London team? The London Lords? The Rippers? The Fog? The Bridge? The Crumpets?
    Pleeeeez! OINK!
