Cousins leads Redskins over Jags in wake of Griffin injury
Sep 14, 2014 - 10:54 PM Landover, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Kirk Cousins relieved an injured Robert Griffin III and led the Redskins to a thorough 41-10 dismantling of the Jacksonville Jaguars in Washington's bittersweet home opener at FedExField.Griffin suffered an ugly injury early in the first quarter when the athletic but oft-injured quarterback threw across his body and turned his left ankle when planting his foot.
"My ankle got caught in the ground," Griffin said after the game. "When I landed I wanted to look at my ankle because I felt something, and when I looked at it, it didn't look in a great position so I knew something was wrong then."
He stayed on the sideline face down in obvious pain and was carted off the field with tears in his eyes and an air cast on his lower left leg.
After the game, the Redskins indicated Griffin dislocated his ankle and will undergo further tests on Monday. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson also suffered an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder.
"We're sick about Robert," first-year Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said. "People don't understand how much work goes into being a starting QB."
Cousins stepped up in their absence and finished with 250 yards and two touchdown passes while Washington's defense tied a team record with 10 sacks -- four from Ryan Kerrigan.
Alfred Morris ran for 85 yards and two scores while backup tight end Niles Paul had eight receptions for 99 yards and a TD for the Redskins (1-1), who bounced back from a season-opening loss to the Texans and snapped a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Jacksonville (0-2) was outgained 449-148, recorded just eight first downs to Washington's 32 and only held the ball for 21 minutes.
Chad Henne, pressured throughout, threw an interception and completed just 14- of-28 passes for 193 yards, 63 coming on a touchdown pass to Marcedes Lewis.
"We're disappointed that we didn't perform like we're capable of playing," Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said. "Today was not very good."
Two plays after Griffin went down, Cousins found fullback Darrel Young in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown.
On the last play of the first quarter, Paul caught a deep pass and was ruled down at the half-yard line, and after flipping the field, Morris barreled across the goal line.
Morris punched in another TD from a yard out to cap a 10-play, 92-yard drive, and the Redskins held a comfortable 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Jaguars had not even gained a first down to that point, but Henne and Lewis connected for a 63-yard score after Redskins safety Bacarri Rambo tried undercutting the throw and overran it.
Kai Forbath's 36-yard field goal accounted for the only points in the third quarter, and Washington padded its lead further when Paul made an acrobatic 2- yard catch in the right corner of the end zone early in the fourth.
Forbath tacked on a 42-yard kick, and Josh Scobee connected from 36 yards out to keep the Jaguars from being shut out in the second half for the second straight week.
Rookie running back Silas Redd capped Washington's rout with a 14-yard touchdown run inside the two-minute warning.

Sep 14 1:08 PM - borderpc I am Irish. Can we take Irish out of the fighting Irish. The leprechaun is offensive. Our society is becoming over sensitized. The sensationalism is going to our heads. Soon we will not even speak anymore because everything will offend everyone.
Jaguars vs. CommandersSep 10 9:11 AM - Cassie I don't want to start any debates or anything, I just was asking.
I have my reasons for it, but as I said,I don't want to start any debates or anything.
Jaguars vs. CommandersSep 3 7:47 PM - mark The short version is that I've hated the name since I was a child, and that there's finally enough discussion about the topic that I felt dropping it is not out of left field.
More than happy to go into more detail for anyone that would like to chat about it. mark@areyouwatchingthis.com
