Steelers hold off Jaguars
Oct 5, 2014 - 10:06 PM Jacksonville, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Roethlisberger threw for a touchdown and Brice McCain returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 17-9, on Sunday.Roethlisberger was 26-of-36 for 273 yards, throwing to 11 different receivers in the win. Antonio Brown caught five catches for 84 yards, Michael Palmer hauled in a touchdown pass and Heath Miller had three catches for 46 yards.
Le'Veon Bell rushed for 82 yards on 15 carries for Pittsburgh (3-2), which bounced back from a 27-24 loss to Tampa Bay last week.
"I liked the way we finished, especially when you consider that we didn't do a good job of it last week and it cost us the game," said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.
Blake Bortles threw for 191 yards on 22-of-36 passing with two interceptions and Josh Scobee made three field goals for the Jaguars (0-5), who have lost three straight games to the Steelers.
"This one hurts," Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said. "We had chances. We just didn't play good enough in certain situations."
Scobee capped off Jacksonville's 15-play, 43-yard drive with a 43-yard field goal at the 5:17 mark of the opening stanza.
Bell broke off a 29-yard run and Roethlisberger found Brown for a pickup of 23 yards to the 4-yard line, leading to Shaun Suisham's 24-yard field goal for a 3-3 game early in the second.
Bortles aired out a throw on Jacksonville's next drive that was intercepted by Cortez Allen at the Pittsburgh 45. After a first down, Roethlisberger was sacked for six yards, resulting in an eventual punt.
Miller's 27-yard grab moved the Steelers past midfield. Pittsburgh kept rolling with three more first downs before Palmer's 1-yard TD catch made it 10-3 with 1:53 left in the first half.
The Jaguars, however, quickly marched down the field. Jordan Todman hauled in a 18-yard dart, Allen Robinson made a 17-yard catch and Scobee split the upright from 35 yards out to make it a 10-6 game at the break.
Scobee added another field goal, this time from 36 yards, with 3:16 remaining in the third to get the Jaguars within a point.
Roethlisberger's deep pass to Brown on the left side for 30 yards moved the Steelers to midfield. Pittsburgh picked up two first downs and worked its way down within the 20-yard line. On 3rd-and-3, Abry Jones sacked Roethlisberger, forcing the ball loose for Andre Branch to recover at the 17.
Two plays later, Bortles' pass was intercepted by McCain and he went 22 yards the other way for a touchdown. The extra point made it 17-9 with 11:32 to play in the fourth.
Jacksonville was forced to punt after going three-and-out with under five minutes to play. The Steelers ran the final four minutes off the clock to secure the victory.
