Manning throws 5 TD passes as Broncos rout Raiders
Nov 10, 2014 - 5:58 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Peyton Manning threw five touchdown passes in a span of just under 17 minutes as the Denver Broncos posted a 41-17 win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.Manning shook off two interceptions to complete 31-of-44 passes for 340 yards before sitting out the entire fourth quarter with the Broncos in firm control. It was the ninth five-touchdown game of Manning's career, one more than Drew Brees for the most in NFL history.
"It was a good division win. That's really all you think about," said Manning. "I thought the most important thing was to get a good road win today."
Emmanuel Sanders and Julius Thomas both caught two touchdown passes as the Broncos (7-2) rebounded from last week's loss at New England.
Oakland rookie Derek Carr compiled 30 completions on 47 attempts, but finished with only 192 yards. He threw two touchdown passes and was picked off twice.
The Raiders (0-9) registered only 10 first downs in their 15th straight loss, the longest streak in team history since a 19-game slide between 1961-62.
"Losing games is what weighs on us," Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson said. "We are just tired of losing games. We have to find a way to win."
Oakland hung around with the Broncos for the majority of the first half, but Denver scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes to build a 20-10 halftime lead.
Running back C.J. Anderson turned a dump-off pass on 3rd-and-8 into a 51-yard touchdown. He broke three tackles down the left sideline before cutting across the field for the go-ahead score with 2:44 remaining.
Oakland's defense had been playing well up to that point, intercepting Manning twice, holding the Broncos to short Brandon McManus field goals in a pair of red-zone trips and forcing two punts.
After an all-too-common three-and-out by the Raiders' offense, Manning threw a pass to Sanders on a go route down the right sideline for a 32-yard touchdown with 28 seconds to play.
It only got worse for Oakland.
Manning hit Thomas for a 10-yard TD off an Oakland turnover early in the third quarter. Raiders offensive tackle Khalif Barnes fumbled after trying to advance an illegal forward pass.
Following a defensive stop, Manning connected with Thomas on a 32-yard TD on 4th-and-1.
Then, after an interception by safety T.J. Ward, Manning and Sanders hooked up for a 15-yard score with 1:01 to play in the third.
Carr threw a 18-yard TD pass to Mychal Rivera inside the final minute of the fourth quarter.
Oakland scored its first 10 points off the Manning turnovers.
Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 41-yard field goal after DJ Hayden picked off Manning on the game's second play from scrimmage.
In the second quarter, defensive end Justin Tuck intercepted a pass he tipped and returned it seven yards to the Denver 12. Three plays later, Carr threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Brice Butler.
