Cassel, Bridgewater lead Vikings over Chiefs
Aug 24, 2014 - 3:40 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Cassel and Teddy Bridgewater combined to throw three touchdown passes and the Minnesota Vikings remained unbeaten in the preseason with a 30-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.Cassel played into the third quarter, completing nine of his 17 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown and one interception as the Vikings won their third straight.
Two of Bridgewater's four completions were touchdown passes to Allen Reisner in the third quarter. The first one was set up by Shaun Prater's interception and the second by Adam Thielen's 75-yard punt return.
Alex Smith also played into the third quarter for the Chiefs, who have dropped their last two games. He completed 14-of-24 passes for 140 yards with two interceptions. Tyler Bray threw a short touchdown pass to Albert Wilson in the final minute.
Cassel threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Cordarrelle Patterson in the first quarter that gave the Vikings a 7-0 lead. Patterson had three receptions for a game-high 71 yards.
Later in the first, Smith was intercepted by Vikings corner Captain Munnerlyn in the end zone but the Chiefs came away with two points just two plays later when Cassel was sacked and fumbled the ball, leading to a safety.
Smith was picked off on the next Chiefs drive by linebacker Chad Greenway but later led the offense on a 77-yard drive that netted a 21-yard field goal from Cairo Santos to get Kansas City within 7-5.
Blair Walsh's 41-yard field goal gave the Vikings a 10-5 lead at break and they blew the game open with 20 points in the second half, including 17 in the third quarter.
Both teams finish the preseason on Thursday, Kansas City at Green Bay and the Vikings at Tennessee.
