Lewis scores against former team; Browns beat Ravens
Sep 30, 2007 - 9:38 PM CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Jamal Lewis showed the Baltimore Ravens that he has something left.Lewis rushed for a touchdown and Derek Anderson was efficient at quarterback as the Cleveland Browns posted a 27-13 victory over the Ravens on Sunday.
Lewis spent his first seven seasons with the Ravens, rushing for 2,066 yards in 2003. But Lewis has battled an ankle injury since his record season, which led the Ravens to look for more production at running back.
After the Ravens (2-2) acquired Willis McGahee in the offseason from Buffalo, Lewis was left without a job. He jumped to the AFC North rival Browns, signing a one-year contract in March.
"They left me out there, and Cleveland picked me up," Lewis said. "They felt like I was washed up and didn't have that burst anymore. And here I am, being successful running the football over here.
"I told the team before the game, 'These guys don't think we can beat them.' I know that just from playing there. Coming in, we knew the Browns couldn't beat us."
In his first game against his old team, Lewis picked up the hard yards on the ground, including a 1-yard TD run with 4:18 left in the first half which gave the Browns a 24-3 lead. He rushed for 64 yards on 23 carries.
Making his third start since Charlie Frye was traded to Seattle, Anderson hardly was intimidated by one of the NFL's best defenses as he consistently moved the Browns' offense.
Anderson threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Joe Jurevicius and a 78-yard scoring strike to Braylon Edwards in the first quarter, giving the Browns a 14-0 advantage.
Overall, Anderson completed 10-of-18 passes for 204 yards without a turnover.
Anderson pointed to the Browns' first drive of the game, a nine-play, 55-yard march as a key.
"Our first drive set the tempo for the whole game," he said. "We came out there and caught them off guard a few times and made some plays. It got them on their heels a little bit. We let them know we're going to be physical. We got in a rhythm and got guys going."
Edwards finished with three catches for 97 yards. Playing with a partially dislocated shoulder, tight end Kellen Winslow added four receptions for 96 yards.
Cleveland improved to 2-1 in the AFC North Division.
"I don't think a lot of people would think we would be 2-1 in the division and 2-2 in September," said Browns coach Romeo Crennel, who was under pressure entering this season. "We feel good about where we are."
It was a frustrating afternoon for the Ravens, who moved into Browns territory on their first six drives but managed just six points.
"We didn't capitalize when we had the opportunities," Ravens tight end Todd Heap said. "That is how the ballgame is going to go when you move the ball between the 20's and don't capitalize."
"It is a low point for us. Thinking about how the game went, not a whole lot went our way. We turned the ball over and gave the Browns opportunities. When you don't put yourself in a position to win, those are the most frustrating games."
Steve McNair took to the air often, completing 34-of-53 passes for 307 yards and a touchdown with an interception. His favorite target was Derrick Mason, who had 10 catches for 78 yards.
McGahee rushed for 104 yards on 14 carries.
"We just got our butts beat, plain and simple," Ravens coach Brian Billick said. "What you do when you get your butt whipped like that is come back, try to correct it, and move on to the next game."
