Jets rattle Beck, Dolphins
Dec 2, 2007 - 10:57 PM By Christopher Stock PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterMIAMI (Ticker) - Rookie quarterback John Beck had five turnovers and the New York Jets kept the Miami Dolphins winless this season with a 40-13 victory Sunday.
Darrelle Revis, Kerry Rhodes, and Drew Coleman intercepted passes for the Jets while Victor Hobson and David Harris each recovered fumbles by Beck.
Thomas Jones and Leon Washington combined to rush for 143 yards and three touchdowns for the Jets (3-8), who beat Miami for the second time.
"They (stink) too," said Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor of the Jets. "They beat us. They will go home happy and their fans will be happy they have three wins this year so good for them."
Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens completed 15-of-24 passes for 236 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to Brad Smith.
"Obviously, Miami's season hasn't gone the way they would've liked but in some ways we can relate," Clemens said. "We approached it like it was the most important game of the week. Fortunately we're going to head home victorious."
While Clemens was efficient, Beck struggled mightily. The rookie completed 23-of-39 passes for 177 yards and three interceptions. He also lost two fumbles.
"Rookie quarterbacks, some of them have good games, some of them don't," Revis said. "We tried to make sure he didn't have a great game today."
Miami took a 13-10 lead in the second quarter after Michael Lehan returned a fumble 43 yards for a touchdown.
The Dolphins were assessed two personal fouls on the ensuing kickoff and the Jets took advantage of the good field position, which resulted in a touchdown reception by Smith.
"You can see there's some tension out there with the two teams and that's football," Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said.
New York then scored the game's next 30 points after the touchdown by Lehan. Mike Nugent kicked four field goals in the game.
The Jets scored on the opening possession of the game on an 18-yard run by Washington, who took the direct snap and weaved his way into the end zone. The 12-play, 84-yard drive was keyed by a 32-yard reception from Laveranues Coles.
Miami responded with a 53-yard field goal by Jay Feely to close the gap to 7-3. It was Feely's longest of the season.
Clemens was intercepted by Joey Porter when his pass deflected off Smith. Porter's interception, his second in as many weeks, set up a 44-yard field goal by Feely.
Immediately following the interception, Clemens found Justin McCareins for a 51-yard gain, but the Jets were unable to capitalize and had to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Nugent for a 10-6 lead.
Lehan returned a fumble 43 yards after teammate Will Allen sacked Clemens and jarred the ball loose. Lehan caught the ball in mid-air and returned it for a touchdown giving the Dolphins lead.
During the play, Channing Crowder was assessed a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness. Vernon Carey also picked up a 15-yard penalty during the extra point for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Dolphins kicked off from their own 8-yard line because of the two penalties.
The Jets took advantage as Clemens found Smith on a crossing route for a 19-yard touchdown to cap off a seven-play, 56-yard drive.
The Jets took a 20-13 lead into halftime after a Nugent 40-yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the half.
After another turnover by Beck, his third of the game, the Jets tacked on another field goal. Beck was sacked by Bryan Thomas and the fumble was recovered by Hobson. Nugent made a 35-yard field goal to to make it 23-13.
"I don't buy that whole rookie thing," said Taylor of Beck. "If he puts you in there, you have to play well."
Beck had another fumble after being sacked by David Thomas, who also recovered the fumble. Jones scored on a 1-yard touchdown run on the ensuing possession to give the Jets a 30-13 lead.
"You go into the game believing that preparation gives you an opportunity to win," Cameron said. "Then you have to go out and and make plays and take care of the football."
Beck threw his third interception on the next play from scrimmage, leading to Nugent's fourth field goal of the game, a 26-yarder.
Washington scored again the in the closing moments of the game with a 12-yard touchdown run.
"Everybody picked us to lose," Hobson said. "I guess that stops all of those rumors."
