Kolb's Cardinals beat Raiders in final minute
Aug 12, 2011 - 5:54 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Kevin Kolb played just two series for the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night, unofficially beginning a new era for a team in desperate need for stable No. 1 quarterback but only willing to dip its toes in the water for a preseason opener.Kolb completed four of his seven passes for 68 yards against the Oakland Raiders, including a 43-yarder to Larry Fitzgerald, the franchise cornerstone wideout who lobbied to get the former Eagles quarterback in a Cardinals uniform.
After the first quarter, Kolb handed the ball over to the backups and Arizona eventually won the game, 24-18, on Isaiah Williams' 28-yard touchdown catch in the final minute.
Starting Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell also played just two series, completing 6-of-9 passes for 66 yards. Kyle Boller was 7-of-8 for 42 yards and new addition Trent Edwards saw the bulk of the snaps, passing for 140 yards and a touchdown on 10-of-19 passing.
Sebastian Janikowski kicked four field goals for the Raiders, including a 57- yarder late in the final quarter that gave them the lead until Arizona's fourth quarterback of the night, Max Hall, connected with Williams for the game-winning score.
Arizona, after going 5-11 with a yo-yo quarterback lineup last season, traded cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a draft pick to the Eagles last month for Kolb, formerly the quarterback of the future in Philadelphia but relegated to a bargaining chip after Michael Vick's resurgence.
John Skelton, Richard Bartel and Hall each threw a touchdown pass behind Kolb, with Skelton passing for 94 yards on 6-of-10 completions.
The Raiders also kicked off a new era of sorts, playing their first game under new head coach Hue Jackson, the former offensive coordinator who took over for Tom Cable. Cable was fired despite an 8-8 campaign last year, Oakland's first non-losing season since 2002.
They had a 6-0 lead after two Janikowski field goals in the first quarter and a half. Skelton and Stephen Williams connected on an 18-yard touchdown that made it 7-6 Arizona at halftime.
In the third quarter, Oakland scored nine points on another Janikowski field goal and David Ausberry's 18-yard TD catch from Edwards (the two-point conversion failed). The Cardinals got a 38-yard field goal from Jay Feely and an eight-yard touchdown catch from Rob Housler.
No. 5 overall pick Patrick Peterson, a cornerback from LSU, had four tackles for the Cardinals.
