Redskins hope to get a third win against AFC team

Oct 10, 2006 - 11:40 PM Tennessee (0-5) at Washington (2-3) Sunday 1:00 pm EDT

LANDOVER, Maryland (Ticker) - The Washington Redskins would not mind playing more games against the AFC.

Residing in last place in the NFC East, the Redskins seek to improve to 3-0 against AFC South teams when they host the winless Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Washington's losses have come to Minnesota and division rivals Dallas and the New York Giants. But the Redskins knocked off AFC South teams Houston (31-16) and Jacksonville (36-30 in overtime) and can get back to .500 again with a victory over Tennessee, one of four winless teams in the NFL.

The Titans are off to their worst start in the Jeff Fisher era. Fisher took over as coach midway through the 1995 season when the franchise was in Houston and is second in current tenure to Pittsburgh's Bill Cowher.

The team last started this poorly in 1984, when it was 0-10 under Hugh Campbell.

But the Titans didn't look like a winless team last week, when they nearly upset the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts. They led most of the way before falling short, 14-13.

Tennessee, which had allowed 121 points in its first four games, shut out the high-powered Colts in the first half. But Peyton Manning threw for a pair of second-half touchdowns, the second to Reggie Wayne with 5:10 left.

Linebacker David Thornton led Tennessee's defense with 13 tackles.

Making his second start, rookie quarterback Vince Young showed his running ability vs. Indianapolis. The third overall pick in the draft, Young ran four times for 43 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown.

But Young struggled reading coverages, completing just 10-of-21 passes for 63 yards and an interception.

Tennessee will try to keep the pressure off Young by pounding the ball on the ground. Travis Henry rushed for 123 yards on 19 carries and rookie LenDale White added 48 yards on eight at Indianapolis. Henry had been a healthy inactive the previous week.

The Redskins will base their defense on stopping the run. Last week, they yielded 123 rushing yards to Tiki Barber in a 19-3 loss to the Giants.

After scoring 67 points in the previous two games, Washington's offense sputtered. It totaled just 164 yards and 10 first downs, and Mark Brunell was 12-of-22 for just 109 yards.

The Titans are making their first visit to the nation's capital since 2000, when they posted a 27-21 victory. The Redskins won the last meeting at Tennessee, 31-14, in 2002.
