Bucs get first win, add to Dolphins' turmoil
Nov 12, 2013 - 7:13 AM Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Already dealing with the drama surrounding Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, the Miami Dolphins now have to deal with a 22-19 loss to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Martin, who has accused Incognito of bullying him, left the team prior to its Week 9 win over Cincinnati. Incognito was suspended by the Dolphins last Monday.
Meanwhile, the Buccaneers have had their share of issues this season. MRSA infections, lunging at the opposition's knees while they're in the victory formation and "Fire Schiano" signs had highlighted Tampa Bay's year up until Monday's victory.
The Bucs never looked back after Bobby Rainey's go-ahead 1-yard touchdown run with 10:19 remaining.
"It's a good feeling to be able to stand up here after a win," said Bucs coach Greg Schiano. "I'm really proud of our guys. It had that same feeling going down the back stretch, and our guys bowed up and made some plays in the clutch to win the game. That's something much needed and something that we'll build on now moving forward."
Rainey carried the ball eight times for 45 yards for Tampa Bay (1-8), which lost running back Mike James to a broken left ankle on the opening possession. Brian Leonard rushed for 57 yards on 20 carries.
Rookie Mike Glennon completed 11-of-21 passes for 139 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Bucs, who came into Monday's game as the league's only winless team.
Ryan Tannehill connected on 27-of-42 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Dolphins (4-5), who have lost five of six since a 3-0 start.
Rishard Matthews caught 11 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns for Miami, which was limited to just two yards on the ground.
"It's definitely tough because we want to be a balanced team," said Tannehill. "We want to be a team that can establish the run game and then use it to set up play-action and things like that, so it's something that we'll definitely try to get back on track."
After the Dolphins scored 19 unanswered points to take a 19-15 lead, the Bucs put together an 80-yard scoring drive. Leonard ran the ball five straight times to begin the series. Tiquan Underwood's 17-yard catch and Rainey's 31- yard run moved the ball to the Miami 1-yard line. Rainey followed with his go- ahead score with 10:19 to play.
Following a punt from each team, the Dolphins started from their own 5-yard line with three minutes remaining. Miami moved the ball to its own 33 before Tannehill was sacked on consecutive plays. Darrelle Revis then intercepted Tannehill to seal the victory for Tampa Bay.
The Bucs came out hungry for their first win. On the second play of the game, Underwood caught a 30-yard pass along the left sideline. James helped move the ball to the Miami 1-yard line before exiting the contest. Glennon then faked a handoff to Leonard and found tackle Donald Penn open in the end zone.
Miami's first possession stalled after center Mike Pouncey was called for unnecessary roughness.
Tampa Bay started its next drive from the Miami 40-yard line. Leonard's 14- yard run and Vincent Jackson's 14-yard catch moved the ball to the 12. Rian Lindell made a 24-yard field goal to make it 10-0.
The Bucs' defense came up with a big play in the early stages of the second quarter. Michael Koenen's 43-yard punt was downed at the Miami 2-yard line. After a loss of one yard on first down, Daniel Thomas was tackled in his own end zone by Lavonte David. The safety made it a 12-0 game with 13:52 left in the first half.
Leonard and Underwood caught passes of 14 and 17 yards, respectively, to help set up Lindell's 35-yard field goal.
"Field position was in their favor, they did a great job but we had plenty of opportunities and they played better in the fourth quarter and deserved to win," said Dolphins coach Joe Philbin. "They played better than us out the gate and the film will say that when we watch the tape. They had better tempo, they controlled the line of scrimmage better and you don't want to go on the road and dig yourself into a 15-0 hole, which is what we did."
The Dolphins' offense finally put a drive together at the end of the half. Matthews' 12-yard catch combined with a 15-yard penalty on Dashon Goldson moved the ball to the Tampa Bay 45. Matthews added an 11-yard catch before grabbing a 6-yard TD pass from Tannehill.
Caleb Sturgis' 40-yard field goal with 7:57 left in the third quarter cut the gap to 15-10. Marcus Thigpen's 34-yard punt return helped set up the field goal.
Following a 21-yard punt by Koenen, Miami started from the Tampa Bay 41. Five plays later, Matthews caught a 19-yard TD pass from Tannehill. The score was 16-15 in favor of the Dolphins following a failed two-point conversion.
Jimmy Wilson picked off Glennon and returned the ball 23 yards to the Tampa Bay 7-yard line. The Dolphins were unable to do anything on offense and had to settle for a 30-yard Sturgis field goal.
