Broncos return home to face Raiders
Sep 16, 2007 - 11:10 AM Oakland (0-1) at Denver (1-0) Sunday 4:15 pm EDTDENVER (Ticker) -- Buoyed by a dramatic last-second victory in their season opener, the Denver Broncos head home to face one of their favorite opponents.
The Broncos look to win their eighth consecutive home opener on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders in an AFC West matchup.
Denver coach Mike Shanahan has an all-time record of 19-5 against the team that once fired him, and he can join Washington's Joe Gibbs as the only active coaches with 20 regular-season wins against one opponent.
Jason Elam kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Broncos to a 15-14 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Sunday's season opener.
Denver barely got the winning kick off, with its field goal unit scrambling onto the field and getting the final snap off with one second left on the clock.
Free agent acquisition Travis Henry rushed for 139 yards on 23 carries in his debut with the Broncos.
Denver also got a strong performance from second-year quarterback Jay Cutler, who was 23-of-39 for 304 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
Cutler completed a pair of key passes to wide receiver Javon Walker on the winning drive, including one on 4th-and-2.
Denver swept the Raiders last season, holding them to 16 points in the two games, but needed to rally with 10 fourth-quarter points to post a 17-13 victory in the second contest.
Oakland showed signs of life offensively in its opening 36-21 loss to the Detroit Lions under Lane Kiffin, the league's youngest coach at 32 years old.
The Raiders stormed back from a 17-0 deficit to take a 21-20 lead behind quarterback Josh McCown, who completed 30-of-40 passes for 313 yards and two TDs.
Ronald Curry hauled in 10 passes for 133 yards, including a 42-yard reception in the third quarter to set up the Raiders' first touchdown.
Running back LaMont Jordan also had a strong game, gaining 70 yards and a touchdown on the ground and catching nine passes for 89 yards.
