Jets have tough task against Ravens' defense
Sep 16, 2007 - 11:10 AM NY Jets (0-1) at Baltimore (0-1) Sunday 4:15 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The New York Jets could not contain the New England Patriots' retooled offense in the season opener.
The Jets hope to have better luck solving the stout defense of the Baltimore Ravens, who also hope to bounce back from a loss in their home opener on Sunday.
Touted as the main contenders to the Patriots in the AFC East, New York looked like anything but in a 38-14 drubbing.
New England's Randy Moss lived up to the hype, shredding the Jets' secondary with nine catches for 183 yards and a touchdown.
An injury to quarterback Chad Pennington with 10 minutes left in the third quarter did not help the Jets. He fell twice while trying to limp off the field, and while he returned to the game, his status for Sunday's ame is questionable.
Pennington finished 16-of-21 for 197 yards and two TD passes to Laveranues Coles, who had seven receptions for 59 yards.
If Pennington is unable to go, second-year QB Kellen Clemens will get the start. Clemens was 5-of-10 for 35 yards against the Patriots.
Thomas Jones struggled in his Jets debut, rushing for just 42 yards on 14 carries.
The Ravens also have injury woes, including at quarterback. Steve McNair injured his groin and had to be replaced by Kyle Boller in the final five minutes.
McNair finished 20-of-34 for 203 yards, but he threw one interception and lost three fumbles as the Cincinnati Bengals turned six turnovers into 24 points in a 27-24 victory.
The Ravens also lost perennial Pro Bowl tackle Jonathan Ogden to a toe injury, which is expected to sideline him indefinitely, as well as punt returner B.J. Sams, who is out for the season after suffering a torn knee ligament.
In addition, linebacker Ray Lewis, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, said he tore his right triceps muscle, although the team is disputing it.
One bright spot for Baltimore was new acquisition Willis McGahee, who rushed for 77 yards on 19 carries and had three receptions for 34 yards.
