Rams seeking first win against Seahawks
Oct 21, 2007 - 10:29 AM St Louis (0-6) at Seattle 3-3 Sunday 4:15 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- It was supposed to be a division showdown. It's turned into much less.
The St. Louis Rams look to break into the win column when they visit the Seattle Seahawks in an NFC West matchup Sunday.
The Rams are one of two winless teams in the league (Miami is the other), a startling development for a team that was expected to contend for the division crown.
Once know as "The Greatest Show on Turf," St. Louis has been feeble on both sides of the ball. The Rams have scored just 73 points in six games, including a 31-point outburst in a loss to Arizona.
In their other five losses, St. Louis has managed just 42 points and has been held to a touchdown or less three times as it has matched the worst start in franchise history, set in 1962, when the franchise was located in Los Angeles.
Sure, injuries to workhorse running back Steven Jackson (groin) and quarterback Marc Bulger (ribs) have hurt, but the Rams staggered to an 0-3 start with both players relatively healthy.
Bulger, after sitting out the past two games to let his ribs heal, said he expects to play this weekend. The Rams could use him after watching backup Gus Frerotte throw five interceptions in Sunday's 22-3 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens.
Jackson, who rushed for 1,528 yards and scored 16 touchdowns in 2006, likely will miss his fourth straight game.
The Seahawks, meanwhile, have come crashing back to the pack in the NFC West after consecutive drubbings at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints.
Seattle won three of its first four games before being humbled at Pittsburgh, 21-0, on October 7.
Returning home against the winless New Orleans seemed to be the perfect tonic, but the Saints jumped out to a 21-0 lead and coasted to victory.
An anemic running game has been the culprit behind the recent slump, with former All-Pro running back Shaun Alexander limited to a combined 60 rushing yards in the two losses.
That forced quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to attempt 43 passes, completing 26 for 362 yards, two TDs and one interception.
The Seahawks have won the last four meetings, including a pair of two-point victories last season.
