Titans look to get offense rolling against Panthers
Nov 4, 2007 - 11:55 AM Carolina (4-3) at Tennessee (5-2) Sunday 1:00 pm EDTNASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Tennessee Titans keep winning despite an offense that has had a hard time reaching the end zone.
Quarterback Vince Young looks to bounce back from the worst game of his brief career when the Titans host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Returning from an injured quad, the second-year quarterback completed only 6-of-14 passes for 42 yards in last week's 13-9 victory over the Oakland Raiders. He rushed for a meager 11 yards on seven carries.
In the last four games, the Titans have scored only five touchdowns. But they won three of them, thanks to Rob Bironis, who has converted 13-of-14 field goals during that stretch.
Tennessee managed only 218 yards of offense against the Raiders, with 192 of that total coming on the ground. The Titans have not scored a passing touchdown since September 24 against the New Orleans Saints.
"We're not happy with the lack of points and the lack of touchdowns, but we definitely had some opportunities (Sunday) and couldn't take advantage of them," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said.
Still, the Titans have done enough to win five of their first seven games and are tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for second place in the AFC South.
With the Indianapolis Colts leading the division at 7-0, the Titans and Jaguars likely are battling for a wild card spot. Tennessee hosts Jacksonville next week in the finale a three-game homestand.
The Panthers, who were drubbed by the Colts, 31-7, last week, would love to have the Titans' problems.
After starting two games, Vinny Testaverde's run in Carolina could be over after the 43-year-old quarterback suffered an injured Achilles' tendon against the Colts.
Testaverde was replaced by David Carr, who has been bothered by back problems and still is not at 100 percent himself. Carr completed 16-of-25 passes in relief of Testaverde but threw for only 103 yards.
Starting quarterback Jake Delhomme is out for the season after undergoing elbow surgery earlier this month.
"This is the hand we're dealt, and so we just do our best to get the guys ready," Carolina coach John Fox said.
Despite the quarterback issues, the Panthers are in first place in the weak NFC South - one-half game ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4)
