Mired in six-game skid, 49ers to clash with Seahawks
Nov 12, 2007 - 11:17 AM San Francisco (2-6) at Seattle (4-4) Monday 8:30 pm ESTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle Seahawks are in their accustomed perch atop the NFC West. Much of that is due to their division rivals.
The San Francisco 49ers, who were expected to make a run at the division title, instead travel to Seattle on Monday night seeking to snap a six-game losing streak.
Offense, or a lack thereof, has ruined what was expected to be a promising season for San Francisco.
The 49ers scored 20 points in a season-opening win over the Arizona Cardinals and have failed to register more than 17 since.
An injury to quarterback Alex Smith and considerable drop-off in the production of running back Frank Gore have bogged down the offense all season.
Smith suffered a separated right shoulder that caused him to miss two games and is still feeling the effects of the injury.
The No. 1 overall pick in 2005, Smith has just two touchdown passes and four interceptions in six starts. In last weekend's 20-16 loss at Atlanta, he went 17-of-38 for 149 yards and three interceptions and a passer rating of 22.8.
Gore, who led the NFC in rushing with 1,695 yards in 2006, has yet to reach the 100-yard mark this season. He sat out last weekend's game due to a sprained ankle.
A meager rushing game also has plagued the Seahawks, who blew a 21-6 lead in Sunday's 33-30 overtime defeat in Cleveland.
Shaun Alexander, the league's Most Valuable Player in 2005, gained just 32 yards on 14 carries against the Browns. In the past four games, Seattle has managed a total of 139 rushing yards.
In overtime against the Browns, Seattle failed to convert a 4th-and-inches and Cleveland quickly moved downfield for the winning field goal.
Because of those struggles, coach Mike Holmgren said he plans to put renewed emphasis on the passing game, which could be bolstered by the return from injury of wide receiver Deion Branch.
Alexander is suffering from a cracked bone in his wrist and minor sprains to his left knee and ankle, and Holmgren said he may not practice this week.
That will put the onus offensively on quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who is coming off a pair of 300-yard efforts - both losses - in the last three games.
