Chiefs seeks 10th straight win over Raiders
Nov 25, 2007 - 11:29 AM Oakland (2-8) at Kansas City (4-6) 1:00 pm ESTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Chiefs greet a welcome opponent as it looks to end a three-game losing streak.
The struggling Chiefs look to get back on track when the archrival Oakland Raiders visit Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
Kansas City has beaten the Raiders nine consecutive times, including a 12-10 victory at Oakland on October 21.
Larry Johnson rushed for 112 yards in that one but was hurt the following week and the Chiefs have not won since.
After dropping back-to-back home games to Green Bay and Denver, Chiefs coach Herman Edwards opted to switch to Brodie Croyle at quarterback.
Croyle had his first career start and played reasonably well in a 13-10 loss at Indianapolis last week, finishing 19-of-27 for 169 yards with one touchdown.
Kansas City's running game has struggled without Johnson, who will miss his third straight game with a mid-foot sprain.
Priest Holmes, who started the past two games, retired exactly one month after making his season debut October 21 against the Oakland Raiders, completing an improbable return from multiple neck and head injuries which sidelined him for two years.
However, Holmes suffered another neck injury in last Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts and decided to call it quits after meeting with doctors this week.
That leaves the running game in the hands of rookie backs Kolby Smith and Gilbert Harris.
Smith, a fifth-round draft choice has 10 carries for 19 yards this season. Harris was promoted from the practice squad upon the retirement of Holmes.
One positive for Kansas City in the loss to the Colts was the stellar play of its defense, which held Peyton Manning without a touchdown pass for the first time this season.
The Raiders are mired in a six-game losing streak and yielded 164 yards rushing and three touchdowns to backup running back Chester Taylor in a 29-22 loss to the Minnesota Vikings last weekend.
Last week's contest was the only time Oakland surpassed 20 points during the six-game slide.
Following two ineffective performances by Josh McCown, quarterback Daunte Culpepper returned as the starter against Minnesota, throwing for 344 yards on 23-of-40 passing.
Placekicker Sebastian Janikowski continues to provide the bulk of Oakland's offense. He was 5-of-5 against the Vikings with field goals and has nailed 12-of-13 attempts.
